(describe a common trait or hobby that you and your child share). Ex: Good morning, My name is Mary, my child is one, Something I have in common with my son is we both love swimming!

KWL Chart Review K - What people already know about RtI W - What people want to learn about RtI

RtI Format

Instructional Support Cycles Intervention Cycle ●The length of time we provide academic or social/emotional support to a student to help him/her work towards their individual goal(s) and grade level expectations ●Each cycle is 6 weeks long (5 cycles total) ●Progress towards goal is monitored midway and at the end of each cycle o Parents also receive updates at these times ●At the end of the cycle, SST/Teachers look at the data collected and collaborate to determine whether the student met their goal and to determine next steps for support or a decrease in necessary support

What do support sessions look like? Support Locations ●In the classroom ●Library ●Library cubicles ●“Attic” workspace ●Cafeteria ●Available classrooms

RtI in action!

RtI Jig-Saw Activity: ●RtI Word “Jig-Saw:  What is “Jig-Saw”? Research-based strategy designed to help small groups or individuals become experts on a few terms or topics.  Who is it for? A small group of students or an individual student.  What happens? ● Each group or individual researches a word or topic. ● Expert group or individual reports back to the home group/partner to share what they found. ● All students become word experts through peer teaching.

Directions for RtI Jigsaw Activity: ●Directions for Sort: o Find a partner who has the same color hair as you. o Give your partner a high-five when you meet them. o Greet your partner! o Decide who will be A and who will be B. o A’s and B’s will each review seven terms and definitions at a level 0 for 3 minutes. o Choose two words to become an expert on. o A’s teach their partner two words, as well as the definition, for 2 minutes. o B’s teach their partner two words, as well as the definition, for 2 minutes.

Data Inventory

Example Question What is measured in AIMSweb? ●Math computation ●Mathematical Application ●Reading fluency ●Reading comprehension ●Writing ●Early Literacy skills ●Early Numeracy skills

Data Inventory cont. If your child scored in the 40th percentile for Terra Nova Reading, which Tier of support would that data point indicate? ●We use cut-off scores for many of our assessments so it is clear and objective. ●We look for Three data points to determine academic services for students.

Data Inventory Cont. When a teacher or parent has concerns for a student’s reading skills, which data could be collected and/or analyzed? ●We consider a classroom assessment or observation ●We will look at AIMSweb and F&P scores along with any of the other reading assessments that may be relevant. ●Terra Nova scores

Data Inventory Cont. What do you notice about the accessibility of the assessments? ●Data that is used to determine a tier of support is gathered by both the classroom teacher and an SST member. ●Because we share the data, there is a high level of communication that is necessary to create a whole picture of a student.

SST/Teacher Collaboration 1.What are your experiences collaborating with a Learning Specialist? 1.How has the Student Support Team helped you in reaching your students’ instructional goals in the classroom? 1.How do your students respond to receiving individualized or small group support from an SST member?

Plus/Deltas Plus Deltas ●Having the teachers come in to talk about collaboration ●THe physical structure of the tables ●Meeting everyone on the SST ●Asking what people wanted to know before the workshop ●Having a partner ●Doing activities that kids do ●Having the assessment inventory ●The assessment inventory: bigger print ●More focus on how this applies to students on Tier I ●Dividing information into different age groups so the information is more individualized ●More information on what parents can do at home ●Case Study
