RTI International RTI International is a trade name of Research Triangle Institute. Ion Analysis 2014 IMPROVE Steering Committee Meeting Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, SC October 15-16, 2014 Tracy Dombek Eva Hardison, David Hardison

RTI International Since the last meeting the RTI Ions Lab…  Received and analyzed ~21,000 nylon filters for anions.  Performed expedited analyses to support UC-Davis in the investigation of the substantially low 3S/SO 4 = ratios at the BYIS1 site.  Evaluating two new ion chromatographs for potential increased efficiency in the RTI Ions Lab.  Participated in the experimental inter-comparison of speciation laboratories conducted by NAREL in Feb/Mar  Performed research evaluating trends on 3S/SO 4 -2 ratios in CSN data from 2003 through 2014.

RTI International Nylon Filters Received 10/7/13 – 10/3/14

RTI International Ion Data Reporting  RTI currently reports ion loadings, in µg, to UC-Davis by quarter (Excel.xlsx file; ).  Ion data for the A14 Quarter (Mar, Apr, May 2014) were reported on 9/3/14.  Going forward, RTI will report according to a schedule agreed upon with UC-Davis

RTI International Evaluation of Metrohm IC system

RTI International Evaluation of Thermo Cap IC system

RTI International NAREL Experimental Inter-comparison of Speciation Laboratories - Study #9

RTI International NAREL Experimental Inter-comparison of Speciation Laboratories - Study #9

RTI International NAREL Experimental Inter-comparison of Speciation Laboratories - Study #9

RTI International NAREL Experimental Inter-comparison of Speciation Laboratories - Study #9

RTI International Chemical Speciation Network: Sulfur/Sulfate ratio Evaluation  Ratios are highly correlated.  Higher ratios were observed in the summer months.

RTI International Summer Distribution of Median Ratios - July

RTI International Winter Distribution of Median Ratios- December

RTI International  115 samples where 80% or less of the sulfur was attributed to sulfate were reanalyzed with and without an oxidation step.  These results shows that only samples from Alaska during the winter months showed some recoverable sulfate, likely due to wood and oil burning for heating.

RTI International Thanks to RTI/ECD Staff
