Trigonometry is the branch of mathematics dealing with the relatives of the sides and angles of triangles and with the relevant functions of any angles. WHAT IS TRIGONOMETRY?

The origins of Trigonometry can be traced back to Ancient Greece in third century B.C. through the studies of Hipparchus of Bithynia. WHEN/WHERE DID TRIGONOMETRY ORIGINATE?

Hipparchus from 150 BC Greece compiled a trigonometric table using the sine for solving triangles. Ptolemy developed more trigonometric calculations circa 100 AD. Pythagoras of Samos an Ionian Greek mathematician. Nasir al-Din al-Tusi developed the subject of spherical trigonometry. WHO’S RESPONSIBLE??

1. An artisan who has been asked to make a three- dimensional, five pointed star. He needs a formula that will help him to do so. 2. A surveyor has been asked to survey a large piece of land. He needs a formula that will help him to figure out the distance across the land. REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS THAT INVOLVE TRIGONOMETRY

3. A sailor decides to go on a long distance trip that will carry him towards the mountains. He realizes that in order to complete his mission he needs to use a trigonometry equation to calculate how far away he is from the mountain. 4. An oceanographer is trying to calculate the height of the tides in the Atlantic Ocean. He would use trigonometry to form an equation that would help him do so. MORE REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS!!

One career that uses trigonometry is nursing. Nurses can use trigonometry to take measurements of peoples waists for example, by using formulas to calculate the hypotenuse, the opposite, or the adjacent angle. JOBS THAT USE TRIGONOMETRY

The three most commonly used trigonometric functions are: Sine Cosine Tangent The ratio of Sine is the length of the opposite side to the length of the hypotenuse. The ratio of Cosine is the length of the adjacent side to the length of the hypotenuse. The ratio of Tangent is the length of the opposite side to the length of the adjacent side. TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS AND THEIR RATIOS

The other Trigonometric functions are: Cosecant Secant Cotangent The ratio of Cosecant is the length of the hypotenuse to the length of the opposite side. The ratio of Secant is the length of the hypotenuse to the length of the adjacent side. The ratio of Cotangent is the length of the adjacent side to the length of the opposite side. MORE TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS AND THEIR RATIOS

All six of these trigonometric functions are related because they are all opposites of each other. I remember seeing a few of these functions in Geometry. … ARE THESE FUNCTIONS RELATED??

The unit circle is a circle with a radius of one. The unit circle is used in trigonometry because it helps a person to remember the special angles and their trigonometric functions. Yes because they illustrate the periodicity of the trigonometric functions. WHAT IS THE UNIT CIRCLE?

The website that I chose is The reason I chose this website is because it explains trigonometry in an easy way and it is interactive. MY INTERESTING TRIGONOMETRY WEBSITE!!

The project that I chose for a later date is a scavenger hunt that the entire class can participate in. The scavenger hunt involves students finding triangles, then describing the triangles according to their trigonometric traits. MY FUTURE TRIGONOMETRY PROJECT
