Week 1 Vocabulary

Querulous: Adjective Grumpy or grumbling The querulous students did not want to learn new vocabulary words. The frog was querulous when he could not catch the insect.

Engender: Verb To create or cause The students’ horrible behavior in the lunchroom will engender a consequence. The scientists engendered a clone of Dolly, a sheep.

Obliterate: Verb To destroy completely The tornado obliterated the small town. The linebacker on the other team told me he would obliterate me; I believed him!

Copious: Adjective Abundant and plentiful We had a copious amount of soda for the party. We always have copious amounts of food on Thanksgiving.

Obscure: Adjective Dark, unknown, hard to understand The teacher’s directions were so obscure I had no idea how to start the assignment! You should never go into an obscure alley by yourself; you never know what’s lurking there!

Extol: Verb To praise highly Teachers often extol the value of turning in homework on time. I want to extol your accomplishments and let you know how proud I am of you.

Pugnacious: Adjective Eager to fight Puppies are often pugnacious and willing to attack anything that moves! You should not be pugnacious; no one likes a bully.

Quell: Verb To calm, pacify The referee was able to quell the fight before it started on the field. The pacifier helped to quell the crying baby.

Artisan: Noun A person who is skillful with his or her hands in the art of making something I have a vase made by an artisan. An artisan made the painting for my parents.

Kindle: Verb To start a fire, ignite, arouse I need some dry wood in order to kindle the fire. Teachers want to kindle the love of learning in students.
