 The Assyrian Empire arose about 1000 years after Hammurabi  Assyria was just north of the Tigris River  Army was well-trained and well- organized  Their army was the first to use iron weapons (spears, daggers, soldiers on horseback)  Empire was divided into provinces (political districts)  Each province governed by an official who collected taxes and enforced laws  The Chaldeans rebelled and took control of Ninevah in 612 B.C.

 Nebuchadnezzar was king of the Chaldeans  These people were Babylonian descendants who rebuilt Babylon. The new city had a huge wall around it.  He ordered the Hanging Gardens to be built for his wife who missed her green homeland  These are one of the 7 Wonders of the World  Babylon was a major trade route, making it one of the world’s richest cities  They were the first to introduce a 7-day calendar  The Chaldeans would eventually lose control of their empire to the Persians
