Presentation transcript:

What is Energy? Energy is the ability to work. You need energy to force an object to move. You need energy to make matter change. The blowing wind, the warm Sun and a falling leaf are all examples of energy in use. Energy makes motion and change possible.

Two Basic Types of Energy Just like there are different forms of electricity, there are different types of energy too. The two main types of energy are: Kinetic Energy Potential Energy

Kinetic Energy Kinetic Energy is energy that is in motion. Moving water and wind are good examples of kinetic energy. Electricity is also kinetic energy because even though you can't see it happen, electricity involves electrons moving in conductors.

Potential Energy Energy is measured in the amount of "work" it does. Potential Energy is stored energy. Examples of potential energy are oil sitting in a barrel, or water in a lake in the mountains. This energy is referred to as potential energy, because if it were released, it would do a lot of work. Energy can change from one form to another. A good example is a Roller Coaster. When it is on its way up, it is using kinetic energy since the energy is in motion. When it reaches the top it has potential (or stored) energy. When it goes down the hill it is using kinetic energy again.

Forms of Energy We Need To Know Mechanical Energy Light Energy Thermal Energy Electrical Energy Sound Energy

Mechanical Energy Mechanical Energy is the energy of motion that does the work. An example of mechanical energy is the wind as it turns a windmill. An airplane soaring through the sky has mechanical energy just like the wind or a flowing river. Sound is another type of mechanical energy.

Light Energy Light energy is a form of energy that travels in waves and can move through empty space where there is no air. Light can: ◦ Travel in straight lines ◦ Be absorbed ◦ Be broken apart ◦ Be reflected

Light Energy Light energy comes from: ◦ Light bulbs ◦ Electricity ◦ Computer screens ◦ Chemicals Examples of Light Energy: Fireflies, lightning, lights in your house, reflections off a mirror

Thermal Energy Thermal energy comes from the motion of tiny particles in matter. The faster the particles move, the warmer the matter can get. Examples of thermal energy are stoves and matches.

Electrical Energy Electrical Energy is when electricity creates motion, light or heat. An example of electrical energy is the electric coils on your stove. It can come from batteries or power plants and it can also be found in nature. Power plants burn fuel to make electricity which is then sent to homes and businesses through wires.

Sound Energy Sound energy (energy of the sound) is a type of wave motion. When we talk we breathe out that occurs the effect of air motion which is because the air molecules vibrating. The vibrating molecules hit our eardrums. That allow us to hear when we talk. Sound energy is possible to be converted into electrical energy and to transmit from one place to another – For example, the sound that comes from a radio or phone. After it is turned into electrical energy it is then transformed back to sound energy that we can hear.
