A Dozen Facts About Light

Light Fact 1: Light is a form of energy (energy is the ability to make things change),

Fact 2: it travels in a wave OR? In a particle form called a “photon,” which is a bundle of energy.

Fact 3: Light travels in a straight line and Fact 4: obeys the Law of Reflection Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection In other words, light gets reflected from a surface at ____ _____ angle it hits it. The same !!!

When not reflected… What ever cannot be reflected is absorbed. This makes objects appear black This makes objects get hot – What are some examples?

Fact 5: Light not only reflects, but also refracts (Refracts: when energy bends as it passes through something) Why? Light passing through a block of ice

Fact 6: Light is fast. Speed of light in air is 300,000,000 m/sec Speed of sound in air is only 340 m/sec

At this speed it can go around the world 8 times in one second.

Shadows Fact 7: Shadows are places where light is blocked, absorbed and reflected, by something in the way Rays of light

Fact 8: Color is determined by wavelength

Fact 9: Visible light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum

Fact 10: When you see a color, the object has absorbed all of the other colors of the rainbow Fact 11: The three primary (or additive) colors of light are red, green, blue

These are also the three types of cone cells in the eye

Projected light is red, green, and blue

Fact 12: the subtractive colors (in pigment molecules) are yellow, cyan, and magenta

For example…expand the man

Quick Quiz 1.True or False: Light is slower than sound. 2.When waves bounce off of something it is called _____________? 3.The additive colors of light are _________, __________, and ___________. 4.When light is ___________ it converts from light energy to heat.
