Commission for Sustainable Development Partnership Fair 2 May 2006

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air The Challenge Almost 3 billion people burn traditional fuels indoors for home cooking and heating. The number of people using these fuels is expected to rise substantially by More than 1.6 million people, mainly women and children, die prematurely each year from breathing elevated levels of indoor smoke.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Solid Fuel Use Source: WHO, Inheriting the World: the Atlas of Children's Health and the Environment

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air About the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA) Launched in Johannesburg at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Now over 120 partners from the public and private sector working together in 67 countries.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air PCIA’s Mission Improve health, livelihood, and quality of life through reduced exposure to air pollution, primarily among women and children, from household energy use in developing countries.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air PCIA’s Goal Increase the use of clean, reliable, affordable, efficient, and safe home cooking and heating practices that reduce exposure to indoor air pollution.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Cross-cutting Issue Energy (LPG, renewables, wood…) Deforestation/desertification Gender (time, health, education…) Health (air pollution, injuries, pests…) Economic development (jobs, activities with time- saved…) Children’s Health (pneumonia, asthma, acute lower respiratory infections …)

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Strategies to Achieve Results Utilizing Partner networks, members, and expertise to accomplish goals. Flexible About “How” We Accomplish Our Goals o Each partner contributes what they do best. o There are many ways to accomplish the mission. o Solutions meet local needs and include a variety of fuel types and practices. Clear About “What” the Goals Are o Mission driven. o Focused on increasing the use of clean, reliable, affordable, efficient, and safe home cooking and heating practices to reduce exposure.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Achieving Sustainable Development Goals Utilize a Comprehensive Approach: o Address social and cultural barriers. o Support sustainable, local markets. o Meet design/performance criteria. o Demonstrate reduced exposure.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Current Partnership Activities Providing a venue for collaboration among countries, NGOs, and the private sector. Exchanging information and lessons learned through outreach and communication. Developing country networks.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Current Partnership Activities Developing tools and resources. o Partnership Web site: o Quarterly Bulletin o PCIA Design Principles for Wood Burning Cook Stoves o Catalog of Health and Exposure Monitoring Methods Building capacity in priority areas. o Stove design and performance workshops o WHO regional health/exposure workshops o Commercialization workshops Implementing pilot projects to demonstrate effective approaches.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Partner Pilot Projects Partners funding pilot projects throughout the world (Africa, Asia, Latin America). Sharing lessons learned. Replicating projects that promote improved cooking and heating practices that are more efficient, meet users’ needs, reduce exposures, and can be produced locally. Scaling-up effective approaches.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Shell Foundation Breathing Space ♦ Over the last 4 years have supported projects which have disseminated over 250,000 stoves mainly employing commercial solutions. ♦ On track to reduce the IAP risk for 1 million households by 2008 and build over 500 successful enterprises in the stove supply chain ♦ SF vision to sell 20 million stoves, in the next 5 years employing $50mill ♦ The scale up strategy will require a blend of grant and “investment” funding (1:3) ♦ Focused and strategic but recognize that it is only one solution ♦ Still a critical need to find a suitable technology that will deliver the improved stove performance and the customers needs ♦ Continued focus on Biomass to reach the most commercially viable and significant scale customer segment ♦ Currently seeking interest from the private, NGO, government and donor sectors to collaborate

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Expected USEPA Pilot Outcomes Reduce exposure to indoor air pollution in 60,000 households (320,000 people). Improve awareness of indoor air pollution in 400,000 households (2.1 million people). Build capacity of 700 local entrepreneurs. Reduce exposure to indoor air pollution by 50-80%. Test, improve, and market a variety of clean household energy technologies.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Opportunities for Involvement Join the Partnership ( Participate in Partnership activities. Distribute PCIA materials to stakeholders. Review and comment on tools in development stages. Look for opportunities to collaborate and leverage resources with the PCIA. Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Questions About PCIA To improve the lives of the more than 3 billion people affected by Indoor Air Pollution from Household Energy use and to achieve the Millennium Development Goals – we need to reach more than 450,000 people per day, every day, between today and We ask CSD14 to endorse this goal as a target and commit to long term public sector investments to achieve this goal.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Questions About PCIA What opportunities do you see for collaborating with the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air – here at CSD14 and beyond - to reduce Indoor Air Pollution from Household Energy use; and to achieve our public health goals?
