Partnership for Clean Indoor Air The Challenge Almost 3 billion people burn traditional fuels indoors for home cooking and heating. The number of people using these fuels is expected to rise substantially by More than 1.6 million people, mainly women and children, die prematurely each year from breathing elevated levels of indoor smoke.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air About the Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (PCIA) Launched in Johannesburg at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Now over 120 partners from the public and private sector working together in 67 countries.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air PCIA’s Mission Improve health, livelihood, and quality of life through reduced exposure to air pollution, primarily among women and children, from household energy use in developing countries.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air PCIA’s Goal Increase the use of clean, reliable, affordable, efficient, and safe home cooking and heating practices that reduce exposure to indoor air pollution.

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Shell Foundation Breathing Space ♦ Over the last 4 years have supported projects which have disseminated over 250,000 stoves mainly employing commercial solutions. ♦ On track to reduce the IAP risk for 1 million households by 2008 and build over 500 successful enterprises in the stove supply chain ♦ SF vision to sell 20 million stoves, in the next 5 years employing $50mill ♦ The scale up strategy will require a blend of grant and “investment” funding (1:3) ♦ Focused and strategic but recognize that it is only one solution ♦ Still a critical need to find a suitable technology that will deliver the improved stove performance and the customers needs ♦ Continued focus on Biomass to reach the most commercially viable and significant scale customer segment ♦ Currently seeking interest from the private, NGO, government and donor sectors to collaborate

Partnership for Clean Indoor Air Expected USEPA Pilot Outcomes Reduce exposure to indoor air pollution in 60,000 households (320,000 people). Improve awareness of indoor air pollution in 400,000 households (2.1 million people). Build capacity of 700 local entrepreneurs. Reduce exposure to indoor air pollution by 50-80%. Test, improve, and market a variety of clean household energy technologies.
