Activities for ISO/TC series standards in China Jiang Jingtong National Geomatics Center of China

Geographic information standardization is an important part in GIS research, development and applications. It is also important for data sharing. Activities for ISO/TC series standards are also important in China. People pay more attention on it now.

Main activities Adapt or adopt ISO standards Translate ISO standards into Chinese Develop the website ……

1. Transforming the ISO series standards into Chinese national standards and training users

China has the law for using ISO international standards Two ways for using ISO international standards: Adopt Adapt

The National Standards below are being developed in China: Adopt the ISO Geographic information – Conformance and testing Adapt the ISO Geographic information – Metadata Adapt the ISO and ISO Geographic information – Quality principles Quality evaluation procedures

Create profiles from Adapted ISO Geographic information – Metadata for different communities, such as: -- The SBSM (National Fundamental Geographic Information System, NFGIS) -- The Ministry of Land and Resources of China -- The Ministry of Construction of China -- The CAS -- …… Develop software for metadata collection, management and maintain

More and more ISO series standards developed by ISO/TC 211 will be adapted or adopted Workshop or seminal for understanding ISO series standards were, and will be held Training class of ISO series standards has been planed

2. Problems for translating the ISO series standards into Chinese

The Guide to International Standards for Geographic Information (Vol. 1) will be published in Chinese in March next year It contains the 19 drafts of the ISO series standards (from to 19120)

Translate the newest draft of the ISO to standards for several times Copyright of ISO standards is one of the problems for publishing Some terms could not be translated into Chinese perfectly, for example: coverage, functional standards, profile, … Some term definitions are still not the same between different documents of ISO series standards, such as ‘data type’, ‘feature’, …

Definition of the term ‘data type’ specification of a value domain with operations allowed on values in this domain EXAMPLEInteger, Real, Boolean, String, Date and SG Point (conversion of a data into a series of codes). NOTE Data types include primitive predefined types and user- definable types. From ISO/PDTR (211n1082) specification of the legal value domain and legal operations allowed on values in this domain EXAMPLE Integer, Real, Boolean, String, Date, and SG_Point NOTE A data type is identified by a term, e.g. Integer From ISO/DIS (211n1359)

Definition of the term ‘data type’ (cont’d) specification of a value domain with operations allowed on values in this domain [ISO/TS 19103] EXAMPLE Integer, Real, Boolean, String and Date. NOTE A data type is identified by a term, e.g. Integer. Values of the data types shall be of the specified value domain, e.g. all integer numbers between –65537 and The set of operations can be +, -, / and * and shall have a well defined semantic. A data type can be simple or complex. A simple data type defines a value domain where values are considered atomic in a certain context, e.g. Integer. A complex data type is a collection of data types, which are grouped together. A complex data type may represent an object and can thus have identity. From ISO/DIS (211n1316)

Definition of the term ‘feature’ abstraction of real world phenomena NOTE A feature may occur as a type or an instance. Feature type or feature instance shall be used when only one is meant. From ISO_DIS_19101_(E) abstraction of real world phenomena NOTE 1 A feature may occur as a type or an instance. Feature type or feature instance should be used when only one is meant. NOTE 2 In UML [23, 24, 30] a feature is a property, such as operation or attribute, which is encapsulated as part of a list within a classifier, such as interface, class or data type. From ISO/PDTR 19103(211n1082)

Definition of the term ‘feature’ (cont’d) abstraction of real world phenomena [ISO 19101] NOTE A feature may occur as a type or an instance. Feature type or feature instance should be used when only one is meant. From ISO_DIS_19107_(E), 19112_(E), abstraction of real world phenomena NOTE A feature may occur as a type or an instance. Feature type or feature instance should be used when only one is meant. [ISO 19101] From ISO_DIS_19108_(E)

Definition of the term ‘feature’ (cont’d) abstraction of real world phenomena NOTE A feature may occur as a type or an instance. Feature type or feature instance should be used when only one is meant. From ISO_DIS_19109_(E), abstraction of real world phenomena with common properties EXAMPLE The phenomenon ‘Eiffel Tower’ may be classified with other similar phenomena into a feature type ‘tower’. NOTE In a feature catalogue, the basic level of classification is the feature type. From ISO_DIS_19110_(E) abstraction of real world phenomena From ISO_DIS_19117_(E)
