AFRICAN ADINKRA CLOTH A Fifth Grade Webquest by Ms. Sirna

INTRODUCTION  You are a graphic artist. Your newest job is to design an Art Trading Card. This is sort of like a baseball card. The subject of your Art Trading Card is African Adinkra Cloth. During this webquest, you will learn all about Adinkra Cloth so that you can make an informative trading card.

TASK  First, you will do some research. You will visit websites and view films. You will use the information you find to complete a worksheet.  You are working with a partner. Take turns- one of you can be the typist and clicker, and the other should write. Switch roles periodically.  To conclude, you will create your trading card online. You and your partner will select the best images, text, and symbols for the trading card.

PROCESS  Part One: Introduction to African Art  Watch the film clip. Click the picture to start the film. Answer the questions on your worksheet.

PROCESS  Part Two: Learn about Adinkra Cloth.  Visit artist Lisa Kerpoe’s web site and read the first paragraph.Lisa Kerpoe’s  Answer the questions provided on your worksheet.

PROCESS  See detailed examples of Adinkra cloth and answer the questions.  Visit the site Inscribing Meaning. Scroll down to the part of the page with pictures. This is where you can find the information you need.Inscribing Meaning

PROCESS  Find out how fabric is created. Watch the cartoon below. Click the rectangle to start the film. Answer the questions on your worksheet.

PROCESS  Now, take a look at some traditional Adinkra Symbols. Each partner should choose two symbols to draw and explain on the worksheet.Adinkra Symbols.

PROCESS  Finally, begin to create your trading card using the planning outline provided.  Look through a selection of images and choose an Adinkra Cloth photo to feature on the card.  You will also plan a title, subtitle, and information. Your card will have symbols and a background color.  The last step will be to go to Big Huge Labs and create your trading card!Big Huge Labs

EVALUATION In order to be successful, a finished worksheet must have the following qualities:  Complete & submitted on time.  Completed by both partners by taking turns.  Evidence that you used your brain to find answers, not just copied text. In order to be successful, a finished trading card must have the following qualities:  Background color (choose together)  Adinkra Image (choose together)  Title & Subtitle (choose together)  At least 4 facts about Adinkra Cloth. (two from each partner)  At least 4 symbols. (two from each partner)  Be saved on Ms. Sirna’s Thumb drive.

CONCLUSION  Thank you for completing this webquest! You researched an art style, found your own information, and used this information to create an Art Trading Card! Super!
