1. GREETINGS The Department of Convergence Nanoscience is an education/research program differentiated from other graduate programs as it endeavors to train new talents equipped with creative knowledge in the field of convergence nanoscience. In particular, the Asian Research Network located within our Fusion Technology Center is working with RIKEN of Japan, governmental research institutes, and other affiliated universities and overseas institutes to secure outstanding lecturers with the aim of providing and promoting rigorous learning. In this increasingly intense and competitive era of science, we are striving to become the frontier in securing foundational technology and training global leaders in the field of convergence nanoscience. Chairman of Department of Convergence Nanoscience Professor Jong-Man Kim As the boundaries between Chemistry, Physics, Life Science, and Engineering are collapsing, we are expending much efforts to generate a synergistic effect through cooperation among different academic fields. To actively respond to the creation of new industries and change in industrial structure brought by the rapid development of the 21st century nanotechnology, we are vigorously promoting collaborated research between the fields related to nanotechnology such as BT, IT, and ET. 2. OUTLINE OF DEPARTMENT The direct trigger for establishing the Department of Convergence Nanoscience was the creation of the Asian Research Network (ARN). As a continuation of this project, we opened the Fusion Technology Center on July 1, 2008, and currently we have a branch within RIKEN, Japan. The main projects of ARN include encouraging international cooperation and collaborated research. Since the Fusion Technology Center already provides exceptional research and teaching facilities, we have more than sufficient basis to train global leaders for convergence nanoscience. In particular, we have secured lecturers with doctorates from participating research institutes such as RIKEN. The diverse specialization of our teachers allows us to provide world-class convergence education programs to graduate students in major Asian countries, and contributes to the globalization of Hanyang University. Our department’s teaching staff includes full-time professors in chemistry, chemical engineering, material sciences, electrical science, mechanical and electric engineering, and communication engineering as well as associate professors with doctorate degrees from research/training institutes within Korea or abroad, such as RIKEN. The diverse specialization of our teaching staff will equip us with the advantage of providing a world-class integrated education program to the graduate students in all major countries of Asia.

3. EDUCATION GOALS The objective of the Department of Convergence Nanoscience is to train top-level individuals who can understand the foundations of nanotechnology and apply such knowledge to the fields of NBT and NIT convergence sciences. 1. Training top-level individuals in the field of convergence nanotechnology Our goal is to train creative and talented individuals who have a thorough understanding of nanotechnology, including nano-materials and nano-devices, and can aptly react to the new paradigm of science technology which involves the convergence of energy sciences, BT, and IT. 2. Training talented individuals to act as global leaders in convergence technology By offering English lectures and collaborating with the Asian Research Network (ARN), we hope to train global leaders in the field of convergence nanoscience.
