10 th Grade Language Arts focus Develop reading strategies to analyze, explain & write about texts Improve writing Learning to argue (yes they are good at this), debate, and dialogue Enhance their voice by Connecting ideas in curriculum to outside issues & explain effectively Use skills in high school & beyond

10 th grade Curriculum Reading, discussion, & analysis of In class – short stories, articles, essays Novels (independent reading) Projects to explore modern connections (film, documentary videos, advertisements, TV, radio, political & social ideas) Writing about: People’s lives (BIOGRAPHICAL NARRATIVE), Analyzing stories (LITERARY RESPONSE) Research and write your impressions of current and past events or ideas (EXPOSITORY, analytical, and research essay) Argue their ideas effectively (PERSUASIVE) Vocabulary study – root words Research and Communication through internet ( , discussion boards, homework site, research sites Grammar, reading, and writing strategies to prepare for Tests

In preparations for California High School Exit Examination CAHSEE Students must pass the (CAHSEE) test to graduate high school English Section includes: 1 essay (chosen from 4 types of writing) 82 multiple choice questions on reading comprehension skills, vocabulary, and finding information. The math section includes: entirely multiple choice and covers a wide variety of mathematical subjects-algebra, geometry, statistics, data analysis and probability, along with decimals, fractions, and general math skills.

Expectations & Help Students will be expected to: Work on projects, Homework, class work in a timely manner Read outside of class Keep an organized notebook Get assignments from on-line or ask when absent You can help your student by: Ask about homework, class work, upcoming projects Encourage your son or daughter to read on a weekly basis not just for class (book, newspaper, magazines) Help with organization if this is a challenge Check parent connect or help them self advocate - have your son / daughter or talk to me
