Guess what? the door bell rings – 5 people now want Hot chocolate. How can we work this one out ? What do we need to make 5 cups? 5 x 4 spoons of Hot chocolate powder 5 x 1 spoon of sugar 5 x 50mls of milk 5 x 50mls of hot water 5 x 1 cup and 5 sprinkles of cocoa powder. What Maths operation did we use to make this problem easy to understand? + ? x ?

So lets look at this math problem……. We know to make 1 cup of hot chocolate you need: 4 spoons of hot chocolate powder 1 spoon of sugar 50mls of milk 50mls of hot water. 1 big cup and a sprinkle of cocoa powder. We now need 5 cups of chocolate. What operation do we need to use then to work out this math problem? Did you guess it needs to be X - we need to times everything by 5 to make 5 cups.

So 5 x 4 spoons = 5 x 1 spoon = 5 x 50 mls = 5 x sprinkle = 20 spoons of chocolate powder 5 spoons of sugar 250 mls of milk 250 mls of hot water 5 sprinkles of cocoa powder Five lovely cups of Hot chocolate for you and your friends. Can you work out how much you need for six cups? And now 10 cups?
