Walters State Proudly Announces Recognition of the Mid-East TN P-16 Regional Council for Excellence in Education as the First Regional P-16 Council in Tennessee

What is P-16? A comprehensive and integrated system that links all education levels from preschool (P) through the senior year of college (16) A powerful framework to improve teaching and learning and better prepare students for life

Mid-East TN P-16 Regional Council for Excellence in Education  Claiborne  Cocke  Grainger  Greene  Hamblen  Hancock  Hawkins  Jefferson  Sevier  Union Is comprised of local education, business and community leaders who represent key stakeholders in education in the ten counties in Walters State’s service area

Membership Consist of Representatives From: Public and Private Colleges and Universities Teacher/Faculty Associations Local Education Foundation Local advocacy Organizations Business and Industry Representatives Parent Organizations Minority Advocates Chamber of Commerce Labor and Workforce Development Organizations Early Childhood Advocates

Increase public awareness of the link between an educated citizenry and a healthy economy Strengthen connections and smooth transitions between Pre-k-12 and higher education to improve student learning at all levels Promote access to competent, caring and qualified teachers in grades P-16 Mid East Regional P-16 Council for Excellence in Education’s Goals

Mission Statement The Mid-East TN P-16 Council for Excellence in Education will bring together stakeholders from the 10 county area to create a common voice of collaboration that will seek ways to improve student learning and achievement emphasizing the link between educated citizens and a healthy economy, strong connections and smooth transitions from pre K-12 through higher education and access to highly qualified teachers.

How Walters State is Addressing the Regional Council’s Goals

Improve student learning at all levels and strengthen the connections between PreK-12 and higher education Freshman Experience courses taught in area high schools each fall semester Tech Prep articulation In 2002, there were over 500 scholarships awarded from the college and Walters State Foundation

Office of Placement Services plans and implements a Career and Job Fair in November each year GEAR UP grant in Cocke County that is providing motivation to attend college starting in the 7th grade Annual participation in Read Across America with Hillcrest, West and Lincoln Elementary schools

WSCC hosts and/or provides judges for the Business Professional of America contests, Creative Writing Competition sciences fairs, and sciences lab demonstrations

Collaboration with high school teachers for Man of La Mancha

Faculty reading at Russellville Elementary School and spring field trips to WSCC, with time in the Writing Lab Field trips to The Miracle Worker along with curriculum enhancements

TAG Creative Writing and Folklore classes for all 5th- 8th graders in 10-county service area

The Library conducted an in-service program for Hamblen County school librarians in August 2002 on the topic “Evaluating Academic Library Databases.” Math Division conducted workshops on ACT test for junior and seniors in Sevier County

Ensure that all students have access to competent, caring and qualified teachers Eisenhower National Clearinghouse in Math & Science – providing resources and access to K-12 teachers Francena Cummings is Director of the Eisenhower Consortium for Mathematics and Science Teacher Training in Math - 3 separate ½ day sessions for every K-12 teacher in Math in Hamblen County

Assisting with Soldiers Memorial Middle School 21st Century Community Learning Center in Claiborne County ACCLAIM – Professional Development Team in math with Soldiers Memorial Middle School Analysis of T-Cap results by WSCC Math Division helped revise the K-12 math curriculum in Hamblen County

Dean of Mathematics presented workshop on need for calculators in math classrooms to the Hamblen County BOE. Music workshops for K-5 teachers Central testing database for elementary schools’ Accelerated Reader program Assisted Alpha Intermediate in writing a grant for a playground surface

Each pre-teacher education student participates in at least 15 hours of Service-Learning per semester in our 10 county region’s school systems Over 300 pre-teacher education students enrolled each semester

Student interns from the Early Childhood Education Program serve in local childcare facilities. Provide training to personnel from all Head Start Centers Host the Lakeway Area Association for Education Young Children

Nursing students assist the health department in dental health screening and developmentally appropriate education with the Greeneville City Schools Public Safety faculty member serve on the Criminal Justice Advisory Board for the Greeneville Technology Center Public Safety Conducts School Bus Driver Training
