International Association for Chinese Management Research Organizing Meeting August 6, 2001, Washington, DC Agenda Introduction Sharing and discussion Organizing Next steps

International Association for Chinese Management Research How, where, and when did it begin? In Hong Kong and China (perhaps Taiwan and elsewhere), we taught (and are still teaching) largely Western theories and practices of management. Manuscripts with Chinese samples were judged for relevance to Western samples and firms, and fit with Western theories and constructs. We need more localized research and the idea of a journal emerged. But...

The journal idea was premature... Not enough high quality manuscripts. Not clear that China is ready to participate or support high quality research. Would Chinese management research be a fad?

Then, last summer in Chicago... The idea of an association first, journal second was born. China is ready and serious about joining the global management research community. An association can be a bridge to facilitate international collaboration and promote high quality research in China.

Mission of IACMR To advance research on management and organizations in the Chinese context. –Chinese organizations inside or outside of China. –MNCs operating in any of the Chinese contexts.

Specific Goals of IACMR 1.To provide a forum for exchange of ideas and experience among researchers about management research in the Chinese context. 2.To facilitate international collaboration between management researchers from around the globe. 3.To promote the development of management research capabilities in China.
