Formal Paper Guidelines UI100: First-Year Seminar

Formal Paper Guidelines  Purpose: Your main point will follow this format: “Having selected a career occupation of ____, it appears that it will (or will not) be a viable career choice for me in the next five years.”  Due Date: May 4 th

 Researcher/Writer Steps: 1.Find a career upon which to focus your paper. 2.Conduct background reading and research to select and define your career choice. 1.Narrow your choice to a specific occupation in the selected environment. Formal Paper Guidelines

Establish the viability of your chosen career in the labor marketplace of today and the future. Identify skills needed, technology factors, changes in work organizations and global impact.

Formal Paper Guidelines Define a specific course of action which you could and should take to enter into this career.

Formal Paper Guidelines  Structure your paper with a thesis statement, supporting paragraphs addressing the viability of the career, and give a strong, summarizing conclusion.

Formal Paper Guidelines  You must use APA documentation style for your paper.  Click on The Writing Center website

 From APAstyle.org When editors or teachers ask you to write in “APA style,” they do not mean writing style. They are referring to the editorial style that many of the social and behavioral sciences have adopted to present written material in the field. The American Psychological Association has established a style that it uses in all of the books and journals that it publishes. Formal Paper Guidelines

 APA Documentation Style The "References" page should be double- spaced within and between entries, with one-inch margins all around. Italics is preferred over underlining.

Note that initials are used for authors' first names and that only the first word of titles is ordinarily capitalized. (The first word after a colon in titles is also capitalized.) Entries are alphabetized by the author's last name or by "the first significant word" of the work's title (excluding "A," "An," and "The"). Formal Paper Guidelines

 Make sure as you research you keep careful notes on where you found your information.  Present your research in a clear, concise, and reasoned format throughout your paper.

Use a 12 point font. Use one-inch margins on all sides of paper. You must attach a “References” page to your paper Your references must include  one published article from a professional journal or reviewed periodical  one other printed resource  one electronic source. Formal Paper Guidelines

Your paper will be approximately 4 pages, typed, double-spaced. Use The Writing Center to help you structure your topic and writing, if necessary.

Formal Paper Guidelines Have someone proofread your paper!

Formal Paper Guidelines Paper is due on May 4th in class!!
