FAQs… How were the performance standards determined? Standards are based on recommendations from the standard setting committees.
FAQs… Why are STAAR performance standards presented as scale scores? And why isn’t passing standard for STAAR set at 70% correct? Raw scores only communicate the number of questions answered correctly. Scale scores consider the difficulty level of a specific set of questions in any given year.
FAQs… How were the phase-in cut scores determined for STAAR 3-8? Phase-in 1 cut scores for Level II were set at 1.0 SD below level II recommended cut scores. Phase-in 2 cut scores were set at 0.5 SD below Level II.
FAQs… Why are STAAR performance standards being phased in? To provide school districts with time.
Why is a 4 year phase-in period for Level II being implemented? Phase-in & recommended standards are further apart in the STAAR program than phase-in & recommended standards were for the TAKS.
FAQs… Why were the performance standards for STAAR 3-8 set after the first administration? TEC § requires that performance standards be aligned from grade 3 to High School. In order to align the standards this way, STAAR EOC assessments were set first.
