International Atomic Energy Agency Mandate to promote and support the safe, secure and peaceful application of nuclear technologies through - Coordinated Research Projects - Technical Cooperation Projects P. Demetriou, DDEP Meeting, Paris 8 Oct Individual research in labs Distribution to several labs, testing and validation of research Results published. Networking and proven technologies ready to be transferred Technical cooperation project to assist in the transfer of technology Dissemination of technology to Member States and socio-economic impact

International Atomic Energy Agency Coordinated Research Projects An important IAEA mechanism for organizing international research work to achieve specific research objectives Bring together researchers in both developing and developed countries to address a problem of common interest Not only further knowledge but improve research capacity in Member States (MS) Results are available, free of charge to scientists, and other users from all MS P. Demetriou, DDEP Meeting, Paris 8 Oct. 2012

International Atomic Energy Agency CRPs cont’d CRPs are initiated by IAEA scientific experts following advice and suggestions of “consultants” who participate in a Consultant’s Meeting A proposal is formed and submitted for approval to the Committee for Coordinated Research Activities After approval a Project Officer is designated and a call for research contracts and agreement proposals follows Once the evaluation and selection of proposals is completed the IAEA PO collaborates with Chief Scientific Investigators from the different research institutes involved in order to develop and manage the research programme Duration is normally 3 to 5 years P. International Atomic Energy Agency Nuclear Structure and Decay Nuclear Structure & Decay Data Network (NSDD) The International Network of Nuclear Structure and Decay Data (NSDD) is an international team of experts who provide recommended nuclear structure and decay data to be used in basic and applied research. Data include: -bibliographic information: Nuclear Science References (NSR) -evaluated numerical data: Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File (ENSDF) Evaluated nuclear quantities: disintegration energies, radiation and transition probabilities, nuclear level schemes, excitation energies, half- lives, decay modes, spin-parity values, magnetic and electric multipole moments, and nuclear band structure. P. Demetriou, DDEP Meeting, Paris 8 Oct. 2012

International Atomic Energy Agency NSDD cont’d The NSDD network was established in 1974 under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and includes 18 data centres and groups located in laboratories, institutes and universities within 10 countries. Network scientists evaluate nuclear structure and decay data for all isotopes on an agreed basis; they also compile the most recent experimental results in the Unevaluated Nuclear Data Library (XUNDL). IAEA support: Individual Contracts to scientists from developing countries to undertake a specific evaluation project (currently 8). P. Demetriou, DDEP Meeting, Paris 8 Oct. 2012

International Atomic Energy Agency NSDD Network ( NSDD Annual Meetings (supported by IAEA) Upcoming: We plan to hold the 20th Network meeting of the NSDD network at the Kuwait Nuclear Data Center, Physics Department, Kuwait University, Kuwait, from January Biennial Workshops on "Nuclear Structure and Decay Data: Theory and Evaluation" organized jointly with the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy. Recent ICTP Workshop was held from 6 to 12 August OUTCOME : Evaluation of the 211 mass chain (to be submitted to Nuclear Data Sheets, B. Singh) P. Demetriou, DDEP Meeting, Paris 8 Oct. 2012

International Atomic Energy Agency CRP’s cont’d Upcoming: - Intermediate Cross Section and Decay Data for Medical Applications ( ) - Reference Database for Beta-Delayed Neutron Emission ( ) P. Demetriou, DDEP Meeting, Paris 8 Oct. 2012

International Atomic Energy Agency Beta-Delayed Neutron Emission P. Demetriou, DDEP Meeting, Paris 8 Oct Important nuclear structure information t 1/2 ( A Z+1): sensitive to low-lying  -strength P n : sensitive to  -strength above S n SnSn S n < Q 

International Atomic Energy Agency Beta-Delayed Neutron Emission P. Demetriou, DDEP Meeting, Paris 8 Oct Energy production: P n determines the delayed neutron fraction  eff : important in reactor kinetics 137 I 87 Br 88 Br

International Atomic Energy Agency Beta-delayed neutron emission evaluation “Significant differences, on the order of a factor of two to four, have been observed in the decay constants for the short-lived delayed precursor groups between ENDF/B- VII and other published values (e.g., Keepin, ENDF/B- VI)...” Pg.2950 NDS 112,2887, December 2011 Special Issue on ENDF/B-VII.1 Library “…While a detailed analysis on delayed neutron precursors should be performed, present resources are such that the most favorable short-term solution is to revert to the ENDF/B-VI 6-group delayed data….” Pg.2951 P. Demetriou, DDEP Meeting, Paris 8 Oct. 2012

International Atomic Energy Agency P. Demetriou, DDEP Meeting, Paris 8 Oct Nuclear Astrophysics: Far from the stability,  -delayed neutron emission becomes the dominant decay process. P n provides the only nuclear structure information Moeller et al., PRC67(03) β-n, -2n,-3n

International Atomic Energy Agency Beta-Delayed Neutron Emission Beta-delayed neutrons are important for energy production, astrophysics and nuclear theory New experimental facilities (GSI, GANIL, JYFL, RIKEN, TRIUMF) are available which will be able to produce new precursors in the neutron-rich region Since the last evaluation in 1993 (Rudstam et al., ADNDT 53, p. 1) and the last compilation in 2002 (Pfeiffer et al., Prog. Nucl. Energy 41, p.39) progress has been made in the production/identification of delayed neutron precursors Over 60 papers have been published which are not yet included in any database There is no database that compiles all relevant data P. Demetriou, DDEP Meeting, Paris 8 Oct. 2012
