There are three key components: First, we focused on workflow around items and documents living in SharePoint. This was a pragmatic choice because we knew that we could have a more effective first generation workflow feature set if we could assume the presence of a server. This means that while we have extensive client workflow features, we have a hub and spoke model, where the “truth” of a workflow lives on the SharePoint server. The second component of our vision was to provide out –of-the-box value for information workers that does not require IT intervention. To this end, we’ve surveyed dozens of companies to understand what the most common workflow applications are and we’ve built workflow templates that does this. We’ll talk about these in more detail in a moment. Finally, while we have invested heavily in our out-of-the-box workflows, we realize that they won’t meet every need, so we have provided for extensibility by enabling rich workflow solutions to be built using SharePoint Designer and the Windows Workflow Foundation designer.
