Girl, 14, stabs sister 40 times

An 11-year-old Illinois girl was stabbed 40 times by her 14-year-old sister, in a small Chicago-area community. Police found the 11-year- old girl unconscious and in need of medical attention in an upstairs bedroom of the Illinois suburb Tuesday morning. She later died. Because the sister, who called police, initially told officers an intruder was to blame for the attack, authorities briefly placed three schools on lockdown. The 14-year-old, authorities say, repeatedly and fatally stabbed the victim -- her half sister -- with a kitchen knife because the teen thought she was ungrateful. The teen said she cooked dinner for her younger sibling and performed other chores. She was also angry that the 11-year-old girl had recently hit her. The night before the attack, the teen thought about it for about 10 or 15 minutes, then went downstairs and grabbed a knife. After the stabbing, she took a shower to wash off the blood, called police and made up the story about the intruder. The 14-year-old was arrested and was charged with murder. The case is in juvenile court and a decision could be made in the future to move the case to adult court. Those who knew the girls said they lived at the home with their mother. Neighbors said the siblings seemed close. The girls were often seen playing together and practicing cheerleading routines.

In Other News A last-ditch push to keep a convicted cop killer alive failed Wednesday night when the U.S. Supreme Court denied a motion to stay his execution. Edgar Tamayo Arias, a Mexican national, was executed last night. His execution marks the first of the year in Texas and the 509th in the state since the death penalty was reinstated in Mexico's government had been pushing to block Tamayo's execution, arguing that it would violate international law. Tamayo, 46, was convicted of the 1994 murder of a Houston police officer. Officer Guy Gaddis was fatally shot after arresting Tamayo and another man for robbery. Tamayo's supporters say he was denied access to his consulate when arrested, as required by an international treaty. In the past five years, Texas has executed two other Mexicans convicted of murder who raised similar claims. The Supreme Court refused to delay either of those executions, which took place in 2008 and The Bush and Obama administrations had urged Texas and other states to grant Tamayo and inmates in similar situations new hearings, fearing repercussions for Americans arrested overseas. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has also weighed in on Tamayo's case, arguing that setting an execution date is "extremely detrimental to the interests of the United States.“ "I want to be clear: I have no reason to doubt the facts of Mr. Tamayo's conviction, and as a former prosecutor, I have no sympathy for anyone who would murder a police officer," Kerry wrote. "This is a process issue I am raising because it could impact the way American citizens are treated in other countries.“ A 17-year-old male was charged Saturday as an adult with aggravated assault and other charges over a shooting the previous day at a Philadelphia high school. Late Saturday, the suspect -- whom Stanford identified as Raisheem Rochwell -- was arraigned as an adult. He faces aggravated assault, violation of Pennsylvania's Uniform Firearms Act, recklessly endangering another person, having a weapon on school property "and other related charges.“ All this stems from a shooting that occurred about 3:30 p.m. Friday in the gymnasium at Delaware Valley Charter High School. What exactly happened in the gym remains unclear. In his final moments, 8-year-old Tyler Doohan managed to rescue six people -- including two younger children -- from a burning mobile home in upstate New York. A last-ditch effort, however, to save his disabled grandfather cost the boy his life. His body was found next to his grandfather. Bill Cosby is returning to NBC with a new sitcom. The comedian will play the patriarch of a multi-generational family. The show brings the 76-year-old comedian back to the same network were his ground-breaking 1980s sitcom "The Cosby Show" had an eight-year run. Researchers with the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology recently discovered intricate and vibrantly colored pictures in the tombs of Abydos in the Egyptian desert. The team leader found the name of a previously unknown pharaoh who ruled the area 3,600 years ago, and the first proof of the Abydos Dynasty. The pharaoh's name is Woseribre Senebkay, described as the "king of upper and lower Egypt."
