My 10 step Engineering Problem Solving Process By: Paul Massengill Problem=Swell in the right side of yard holding water from run off from lot next door and gutter downspouts from my house. This is causing a substantial amount of water to stagnate in this swell. Research Lowe’s Home Improvement Tim Hatton: Better Built Homes of Central Ky., LLC. Out lay of House and yard Ditch line House swell Drive Ditch line hill
Ideas for proposed project 1)Run drain lines to ditch in back and ditch on side. Use corrugated pipe and gravel. Dig ditch to specifications of material.Cost $186 2) Run drain lines to ditch in front and back. Use corrugated pipe and gravel. Dig ditch to specifications of material. Cost $186 3) Run drain lines to front ditch, use corrugated pipe and gravel, dig ditch to specifications of material. cost $186
Criteria to be met 1)Must get the maximum drainage for swell area. 2)Must meet product requirements and installation standards. Constraints 1)Can’t exceed budget of $200. 2) Trade offs (if any) to meet cost 3)No less than 6 inch grade from house. 4)Must be at least 16 inches underground to prevent crushing of product. 5)Make sure all utilities are not in digging area.
Design choice among solutions Drain line
Choice of solutions I chose Design #2.Because they all cost the same,100 ft. roll of corrugated pipe cost $126,the gravel cost $50.This one will maximize the amount of water coming out of the swell. It will also keep the water from going to one ditch. I will also be able to use most of the material on this design.
