Meaning of Area Created by Dr. Kien Lim

“The term ‘area’ is used to refer both to the attribute and to the measurement.” For example: “They extended the search area for the missing hikers.” For example: “The area of my property is 3950 square feet.” ‘What does the above statement mean?

For small areas, we can use a unit area of 1 square inch. Make a prediction: How many square inches are there in 1 square foot? For bigger areas, we can use a unit area of 1 square foot. Draw to scale on a piece of paper the unit area of 1 square inch. 1 inch

Make a prediction: How many square inches are there in 1 square foot? 1 inch 1 foot 1 ft  1 ft = 12 in  12 in 1 ft 2 = 144 in 2 Note: 1 ft = 12 in

A farmer has two large square fields. The length of the smaller square field is 100 meters and the length of the larger square fields is 300 meters. If he takes 4 days to dig a ditch around the small field, about how many days will it take him to dig a ditch around the big field?

300 meters 100 meters 4 days ? days

A farmer has two large square fields. The length of the smaller square field is 100 meters and the length of the larger square fields is 300 meters. If he uses 5 bags of seeds to plant the small field, about how many bags does he need for the big field?

300 meters 100 meters 5 bags ? bags
