Flight Readiness Review March 2005

Vehicle Criteria Testing and vehicle design Bulkheads: 9-Ply ½” birch plywood made by Public Missiles, Ltd or ¼ inch aircraft plywood Tests completed: Parachute Testing Ejection Charge Testing Ground Control Experiment Testing of Electronics Fins: 5-ply 8 inch Aircraft grade Plywood/ Fiberglass sandwiches 2 Part Expanding Foam Epoxy mixed with Kevlar Pulp

Vehicle Criteria Recovery Tubular Kevlar & Tubular Nylon: Uses: to connect the Drogue and Main Parachutes to the rocket body Locations of Use: Two U-bolts where both the drogue and the main ejection charges (Tubular Kevlar) Tubular Kevlar to the Parachutes (Tubular Nylon) Amounts: Tubular Kevlar: Two 5 ft lengths Tubular Nylon: Two 60 ft lengths One 30 ft length One 20 ft length One 10 ft length

Recovery Parachutes: Main Parachute: Public Missiles PAR ft/s Drogue Parachute: Top Flight Recovery Crossfire 36" 75 ft/s Vehicle Criteria

Payload Integration Vehicle Criteria Bulkheads: Three bulkheads placed into the payload bay in order to hold the angle, stabilize the sensors and protect the sensors. Cap: Made of a bulkhead and two different sizes of coupler tubing, designed to protect the sensors during ascent and to trigger the LabPros to start the experiment.

Payload Integration Vernier LabPros: Used to collect and record the data from the sensors. Sensor Clusters: Two clusters of 3 sensors(1 UVA, 1 UVB, 1 light sensor) Vehicle Criteria

Experiment Concept Payload Criteria Successfully triggered both of the LabPros Properly record accurate data from all three sensors Data collected shows a trend between UVA/UVB and altitude Mission Success Criteria: The experiment is designed to help skiers, snowboarders, and other mountain activities enthusiasts to be able to better protect themselves against the Ultraviolet Radiation that they are exposed to.

Science Value Payload Materials: 3 Vernier UVA sensors 3 Vernier UVB sensors 3 Vernier Visual Light sensors 3 Vernier LabPros 12 new AA batteries Record Turntable Payload Criteria

Design of Payload Reasons for Design: Angles: The angles are used to help reduce the effects of the Drogue Parachute on the experiment. Bundles: The reason that we used sensor bundles is because the three scientific values that are being collected in our experiment can vary depending on direction and angle therefore bundles are used to standardize the data. Payload Criteria

Assembly Payload Criteria Throughout the assembly of this entire rocket (including, and especially, the payload) extra care has been taken to ensure an accurate assembly of all parts.

Overall Rocket Design Assembly

Safety and Quality Assurance Launch Operations Procedure To ensure the safety and quality of this project we have: Researched all necessary background information Planned out all work before beginning assembly Had two or more team members working on or watching all aspects of the building process Paid careful attention to all details

Calendar April 4, Finish construction of main rocket April 23, Launch SLI Jr. rocket in Huntsville, Alabama May 31, Complete and submit SLI Jr. Report
