SVOM  PRR October 2013 – SHANGHAI ECLAIRS & MXT Instruments of the French Payload Karine MERCIER French Payload Manager October 2013 SHANGHAI

SVOM  PRR October 2013 – SHANGHAI 55  ECLAIRs instrument in charge of GRB detection and localization INSTRUMENTS OF THE FRENCH PAYLOAD ECLAIRS and MXT the 2 French Payload instruments:  MXT in charge of fine localization and dedicated to GRB follow-up observation in soft X-ray band  the FCU -French Control Unit: the French data processing in charge of the management: o of the FPL instruments (ECLAIRs, MXT, VHF) o of the Automatic Alert Sequence in board o of the Interface with PF & C-DPU  the VHF subsystem (VHF Emitter & Antennas) dedicated to transmit GRB message to ground in real time FCU Calculateur FCU VHF-E VHF-A VHF MXT MXT - DPU TXG ECLAIRs UGTS In addition to manage the French instruments and the Alert

SVOM  PRR October 2013 – SHANGHAI 66 FPL Activities status from mid-2011 Status PLM / FPL mi 2011:  ECLAIRs: end of Phase B (PDR October 2011)  MXT: end of Phase A (Key Point January 2012)  VHF subsystem and FCU: end of Phase A (Breadboarding end 2011) No major activities from 2012 to mid 2013 only few works on the “heart” of the instruments. Since mid 2013 adaptation to the new PF with the hypothesis:  The SL & PLM general architecture stays similar  The interfaces are maintained as far as possible  Mass and power allocations for the French Payload are reduced

SVOM  PRR October 2013 – SHANGHAI 77 Drivers are defined to adapt the FPL on the new PF: The major impact is the mass and power allocation reduction. Hypothesis defined to reach the goal:  Keep the instrument performances (instrument sizes)  Remove redundancies (ECLAIRs, MXT, FCU and VHF-E)  Reduce the electronic boxes number and merge as far as possible same functions  Review design to make lighter  Major impacts on ECLAIRs contrary to MXT already a light version of instrument The updated French payload Allocation FPL PF Proteus 2011 PF Chinoise 2013  Masse (Kg) kg Power (W) W

SVOM  PRR October 2013 – SHANGHAI 88 New electrical architecture for FPL

SVOM  PRR October 2013 – SHANGHAI 99 Budgets FPL Reductions: 18 kg and 71W  To be confirmed by detailed studies in Phase B  Mass budget  Power budget

Shanghaï, october 25th 2013SVOM delta PRR review board first draft synthesis SVOM Delta PRR Review Board first draft synthesis Note : the following document is preliminary and not exhaustive

Shanghaï, october 25th 2013SVOM delta PRR review board first draft synthesis Thanks The review board thanks  SECM for the perfect organization of the review and their hospitality  Both sides for having organized a full range experts participation to this important key point  The project teams for the clarity and the completeness of the presentations

Shanghaï, october 25th 2013SVOM delta PRR review board first draft synthesis Recall of Delta PRR objectives The Delta Preliminary Requirements Review is aimed at reviewing and assessing the following points : 1. the feasibility of the updated design of the complete system and its compliance with the mission requirements 2. the suitability of the development plan, and associated schedule 3. the suitability of the project organization between Chinese and French sides Objectives of the review completed mainly focused on the evolutions since the PRR

General Assessment A lot of work done by both sides since the February 2013 proposal for a new sharing of responsibilities (Chinese side will provide the Platform, PIM, VT, GRM, Launch service and French side will provide Eclair, MXT and the alert system) Scientific mission improved with the four instruments enhancements System architecture preserved and sharing of responsibilities much clearer System performances compliant with mission requirements No showstopper identified  Mission feasibility confirmed but Development plan to be refined especially for system and mission performances verifications Schedule incompatibility between the proposed launch date and the French payload deliveries Shanghai, October 25th 2013 SVOM delta PRR review board first draft synthesis

Shanghaï, october 25th 2013SVOM delta PRR review board first draft synthesis Mission and Science SVOM mission science is unique and should allow a better knowledge of Gamma Ray Bursts The instrument suite has been optimized –Eclair : sensitivity improved (modification of the coded mask) –GRM : localization ability and larger “global” FoV (3 GRM instead of 2) –MXT : new high performance (FoV) –VT : FoV enlarged, NIR performances preserved (new CCD) and pointing accuracy improved (FGS) –GFTs and GWAC : enhancement of the scientific returns System performances compliant with mission requirements with some hypotheses to be confirmed in phase B (R1-R2-R9-R10) Science management plan to be updated in accordance with the « new » MOU

Shanghaï, october 25th 2013SVOM delta PRR review board first draft synthesis System General GRB detection and slew strategy to be refined and confirmed in phase B CNES S-Band support for short delay ToO (12h) Compatibility between the on board S-Band subsystem and the S- Band Cnes Stations to be checked before end of the year Programmatic decision to be taken with regard to the scientific expectations Orbit selection to be optimized taking into account the PF current design without the propulsion system (radiation risk, mission life time,…) Risk assessment about debris avoidance without propulsion to be performed System activities, reviews and verification process to be addressed in a joint system development plan

Shanghaï, october 25th 2013SVOM delta PRR review board first draft synthesis Satellite and Payload The new satellite design complies with the mission requirements Improvement of the pointing performance with FGS in the AOCS loop Efforts made by both sides to reduce mass and power SAT and PL Environment requirements to be finalized taking into account the new launcher inputs

Shanghaï, october 25th 2013SVOM delta PRR review board first draft synthesis Management System development plan : agreement between both sides to issue a dedicated system development plan dealing with system activities, system reviews and system verifications and validations Level 2 reviews : no joint review foreseen at satellite level despite being compliant with the previous PIP Schedule : Schedule incompatibility between the proposed launch date (2017) and the French payload deliveries (FM in 2018 leading to a launch in 2019) ITAR : both sides have made their best efforts to avoid ITAR. CNES has identified the US parts and will complete their report to the CNES management after the final US rules will be issued (end 2013) JSC : Chinese side has defined the Chinese members to JSC despite for French side this issue will be managed by high level management

Foreseen recommendations (1/2) Mass budget / redundancies : – to clarify the mass allocated by the launcher to the satellite in order to improve margin – to jointly revisit the mass allocation to payload – for the French side to improve the PL reliability by minimizing the risk of failure on the weakest elements (Power converters,…) Shanghaï, october 25th 2013SVOM delta PRR review board first draft synthesis

Foreseen recommendations (2/2) Joint reviews : To have at least 2 joint reviews dealing with satellite topics phased with the Chinese PDR and (TBC) CDR satellite reviews Schedule : to balance the launch date with the technical challenges, programmatic constraints, scientific expectations and cooperation risks JSC : French side to define the members for a JSC to be held before end of 2013 ITAR : French side to clarify the situation for the JSC Shanghaï, october 25th 2013SVOM delta PRR review board first draft synthesis

Shanghaï, october 25th 2013SVOM delta PRR review board first draft synthesis Preliminary Conclusions Review succesfull NO technical showstopper to go in phase B Recoms to be implemented
