Welcome to Literature Circles Honors Social Studies Class ! Please pick up a textbook Please have (2) post it notes Be ready to listen and explore this new strategy for us this year !

Literacy/Literature Circles What Are Literature Circles? In literature circles, small groups of students gather together to discuss a piece of literature in depth. The discussion is guided by students' response to what they have read. You may hear talk about events and characters in the book, the author's craft, or personal experiences related to the story. Literature circles provide a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books. Collaboration is at the heart of this approach.

Let’s take a look at a classroom that is using Literary Circles. Now, keep in mind that the video clip shows an ELA classroom, we are Social Studies, but the roles that are used in the Lit Circle we will use as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVK9ZV-AinA

Who will be in your Lit Circle this year ? Color groups this year will be….. Please write down on the cover of your packet the names of the classmates who are in your group. Yes, write down the number that is with their names. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ( only one group has this)

Now move to your lit circle groups Can I have you move to your lit circle group. Please bring with you your textbook and your informational role card and your mind how you will tell your group what your job is. Once in your groups, being rotating around for everyone to share what their role is and what they are to do when they have that role. Report out to whole group when done.

Collection of the role cards and what your task is today ! Today you will begin to practice the role you learned about today. Yes, in the future we will rotate these roles. Each group is to read Chapter 20 section 1 and section 2 With the Chapter sections as your piece of “ literature” you will complete your packet. Everyone has a role to play and work to do. If you need markers or supplies, please help yourself to the materials on the front table.

Task- Using Chapter 20 sec 1 +2 as your “ literature” Everyone will share with the lit group your information to record into the packet. You are only turning in (1) packet. You may break apart the packet and give each person their page to complete. Are there any questions ? You have the rest of the block to work on this. I will collect (1) packet from each group to serve as your classwork grade today and to see how well you understood your roles.

Finishing with your Lit circle group

Closure What are lit circles? What are the different roles that are available in them? How do you think your group did in applying these roles to Chapter 20 section 1+2 today?
