My name is … and I am … I’ve been doing this for xx years I will be giving a short presentation on the Dynamic events for those who have signed up to work on the track. Last year’s competition at the Michigan International Speedway was one of the MOST SUCCESSFUL events ever. The weather cooperated (well sort of – we had some rain on Friday – but hey, this is Michigan, right?) Plenty of willing volunteers from Chrysler, Ford, GM, Honda, Toyota, the SCCA, and others. Four on-track Dynamic Events Acceleration Friday 9:00 am – 12:30 pm Skid Pad Friday 9:00 am – 12:30 pm Autocross Friday 2:30 pm ~ 5:30 pm Endurance & Fuel Economy Saturday 9:00 am ~ 12:30 pm 1:45 pm ~ 5:30 pm End times for the Autocross and Endurance events are APPROXIMATE. We want to give all teams the opportunity to run (no matter how slow they may be). For the past three years we actually ended on time, however in previous years we often ran over because of weather delays. 2012 Formula SAE

Acceleration Event Friday morning 75 meter (82 yard) straightaway 2 drivers per car / 2 runs per driver Scoring: 0 to 75 points possible Fastest run counts Cones Down or Out = 2 sec penalty per cone Off Course = DNF (Did Not Finish) = 0 points The course worker’s safety briefing for the Acceleration event will take place on the track at 8:30am next to the timing & scoring motorhome. Look for the SCCA banner. Please be on time. When showing this slide, explain the “Down or Out” cone rule. This year we will be again marking the cone locations with colored carpenter’s crayons. As in previous years, the exact outer perimeter of the racing track lanes will be marked with chalk. 2012 Formula SAE

Skid Pad Event Friday morning 2 circles of ~50’ diameter in a figure-8 pattern 2 separate layouts (for logistical purposes) 2 drivers per car / 2 runs per driver Each run consists of 2-right and 2-left laps Scoring: 0 to 50 points possible Fastest left and fastest right laps count Cones Down or Out = 0.25 sec penalty per cone Off Course or Incorrect number of laps = DNF The course worker’s safety briefing for the Skid Pad event will take place on the track at 8:30am next to the timing & scoring motorhome. Look for the SCCA banner. Please be on time. Course workers need to stay alert for this event, cars move fast in a very tight area, and often lose it! Two skid pads are set up so that we can get through all of the teams in the 3 hour time slot. Acceleration & Skid Pad events have a hard end time of 12:30pm, no exceptions. Track Layout – Skid Pad 2008 Once again this year, due to the limited area that we have to work, the course layout is TIGHT. Track workers will be positioned on the OUTSIDE of the track. We will have to cross the track to assist disabled cars on the inside of the track – USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN CROSSING A HOT TRACK! We will need to SLOW down the cars as they exit – they are moving fast and the driver’s adrenaline is pumping! Very briefly explain how the Skid Pad will operate – 2 laps to the right, then 2 laps to the left, then exit out. 2012 Formula SAE

Autocross Event Friday afternoon Course Length = approx ½ mile 2 drivers per car / 2 laps per driver Typically 3-4 cars on the track concurrently Avg Speeds = 30 to 40 MPH Scoring: 0 to 150 points possible Cones Down or Out = 2 sec penalty per cone Off Course = 20 sec penalty Missed Slalom = 20 sec per occurrence DNF if car stalls or breaks & cannot restart without external assistance The course worker’s safety briefing for the Autocross event will take place on the track at 1:35pm next to the timing & scoring motorhome. Look for the SCCA banner. Please be on time. Comments on vehicle restarting: We will give them “a couple of minutes” to attempt a re-start. Only the driver can attempt a re-start (no assistance from the course workers or team members). If driver gets out of car (ie. removes safety belt) they are done, and that run will be scored as a DNF. 2012 Formula SAE

Note that the track layout shown on the screen is a typical layout, and changes from year-to-year. Due to construction traffic this year, the Start/Finish of the Autocross will be set up 180 degrees from previous year’s events. Teams will enter at the north gate 50 crossover, will line up north-to-south, but will still run in a clockwise direction. Track workers will be assigned to one of the five corner stations and will be positioned on the OUTSIDE of the track. We will have to cross the track to assist disabled cars on the inside of the track – USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN CROOSING A HOT TRACK! Endurance & Fuel Economy Event All day Saturday Course Length ~1.0 Kilometer Total run = 2 x 11 laps (22 Kilometers) 2 drivers per car / Driver change midway Typically 5-7 cars on the track concurrently Passing only within designated passing zones Avg speed = 35 MPH / Approx top speed = 65 MPH Scoring: Endurance 300 points + Fuel Economy 100 points possible Cones Down or Out = 2 sec penalty per cone Off Course = 20 sec penalty Missed Slalom = 20 sec per occurrence DNF if car stalls & cannot restart without external assistance The course worker’s safety briefing for the Endurance event will take place on the track at 8:30am next to the timing & scoring motorhome. Look for the SCCA banner. Please be on time. Endurance run order is based on the results of Friday’s Dynamic events. This year’s run order will be a bit different from previous years: Slowest cars run from 9am-Noon. Fastest cars beginning at 1:15 to approx 3:30pm. Remaining cars run after 3:30. Explain that is very important to quickly blend the cars back onto the track after being passed. Show how to wave them in and out of the passing lane. On-Track Corner Workers Team on each corner: Corner Captain Radio Communicator Yellow / Red Flagger Cone Shaggers Blue Flagger * Passing Zone Signal Marshals * Each corner station will have a team of 5-10 workers who will be positioned on the OUTSIDE of the track. We will have to cross the track to assist disabled cars on the inside of the track – USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN CROOSING A HOT TRACK! The Corner Captain is usually an SCCA licensed Track Marshal – follow their lead, they are trained on how to deal with on-track emergencies. Two MIS safety trucks and an ambulance will assist us in the case of fires, serious emergencies and track clean-up. 2-way radio communications from corners to Race Control and Timing/Scoring follows SCCA communications protocols. Yellow, Red, Black flags follow SCCA flagging standards. We’ll talk about the flags in a minute. Cone Shaggers must we aware of oncoming cars at all times – ONLY RETRIEVE A CONE WHEN IT IS SAFE & CLEAR. * Endurance Event only 2012 Formula SAE

Corner Workers Safety Tips Wear appropriate outerwear – no shorts Bring Work Gloves Do not use cameras or cell phones when track is hot Always be aware of oncoming cars Cross track only when absolutely necessary Be careful when approaching or pushing cars Be aware of hot exhaust system, leaking fuel or coolant, engine fires, broken body or suspension parts, etc. Safest location to push the car is on the main roll hoop, but watch your footing! Try to dress in light-colored clothing. Helps you stay cool, and does not conflict with the flag colors. Dress for the weather, especially if rain or cold is in the forecast. Be aware that it’s always windy out at MIS. Try to bring white or orange colored gloves. Photography IS allowed when the track is not hot, or in all non-racing areas. All photographers must have a spotter. Be careful when pushing a car – do not get pants, sleeves, ID badges tangled in the tires. Don’t end up like Mr. Bill ! Watch out for the hot exhaust muffler & pipes. 2012 Formula SAE

Corner Workers Comfort Tips Wear comfortable shoes (but NO open-toes) Apply Sunscreen Stay Hydrated Communicate with your Corner Captain and Co-Workers Track sessions are 3-4 hours long. Be prepared. Show up on time and stay until the end of your shift - We’re counting on you! Bring a positive attitude – HAVE FUN ! We will deliver water, Gatorade, and snacks to you on the track during the events. No need to bring your own – Ok to bring a backpack, but travel light. Don’t just walk off the track, let your corner captain know when you are leaving for a potty break. Let the corner captain know if you don’t feel well, or are hurt. PLEASE DON’T LEAVE EARLY. 2012 Formula SAE
