How plants grow

There are many different types of plant

Tree Fern Moss … and in the ocean Seaweed Microscopic alga Kelp On land...

Although they look very different, all of these plants live and grow in the same way

Growing means getting bigger You need food to be able to grow

All animals eat food to grow

The lion eats meat The wildebeest eats grass

But how does the grass grow?

All plants can make their own food They use sunlight to build their food from simpler materials

Water and Carbon dioxide gas Add Sunlight Sugar and Oxygen gas ++

Plants can only grow where there is enough light

In the ocean, they can only grow on the bottom in shallow water

In the ocean, most light disappears in the top 100 metres Plants cannot grow deeper than this

Where the ocean is deep, plants have to float close to the surface to get enough light

This single-celled alga is about one- fiftieth of a millimetre across There may be one million of these tiny cells in each litre of surface seawater

You have seen that - Plants can make their own food Plants use sunlight to make sugar

You have seen that - Plants produce oxygen In the ocean, plants can only grow in shallow water
