3-3 Vocab

One of many branching, threadlike tubes that make up the body of a fungus.

The reproductive hypha of a fungus.

A form of asexual reproduction of yeast in which a new yeast cell grows out of the body of a parent.

The combination of a fungus and either an alga or an autotrophic bacterium that live together in a mutualistic relationship.

3)Describe where fungi like to grow. Warm, Moist places (foods, bathroom tiles, tree bark, forest floors)

4. How do fungi obtain food? List all 3 steps. 1.Grow Hyphae into food source 2.Digestive chemicals ooze into food source 3.These break down food into liquid that are absorbed by hyphae

5) If you were a fungus, how would you eat a chocolate cake? By sticking fingers into the cake Fingers would secrete digestive chemicals Fingers would then absorb the cake

6) Describe what spores are and how they help fungi reproduce. They are tiny cells that can develop into a new organism if they land in a favorable area, they can form into new fungi.

7) Describe how fungi can reproduce asexually (most do this) When there is adequate moisture and food, most fungi will reproduce asexually by growing fruiting bodies.

8) Describe how fungi can reproduce sexually. -When growing conditions are unfavorable, the hyphae from 2 fungi grow together to exchange DNA. A fruiting body forms to make spores. These grow into genetically different fungi than the parents.
