Presentation transcript:

CVD – Cardiovascular Disease Disease that affects the heart or blood vessels.

Types of CVD’s Hypertension – High Blood Pressure – Pressure on the walls of the vessels during the contraction of the heart and during the rest phase of the heart beat. Normal blood pressure is 120/70.

Type of CVD Atherosclerosis – Plaque builds up on the artery walls. Causes * food choices * high blood pressure * smoking * high cholesterol levels

Diseases of the heart Diagnostic tools

EKG MRI NUCLEAR IMAGING ANGIOGRAPHY

EKG

MRI

NUCLEAR IMAGING

ANGIOGRAPHY

TREATMENT OPTIONS

CORONARY BYPASS

ANGIOPLASTY

MEDICATION

PACEMAKER

OTHER HEART DISEASES CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE – A GRAUALLY WEAKENING OF THE HEART WHERE IT DOES NOT PUMP WITH THE FORCE NEEDED. ANGINA PECTORIS – CHEST PAIN CAUSED BY A LACK OF OXYGEN TO THE HEART ARRHYTHMIAS - IRREGULAR HEARTBEATS. THIS IS COMMON AND NOT USUALLY A PROBLEM, HOWEVER SOME ARRHYTHMIAS CAN BE SERIOUS.

Risk factors of cvd you can control * Tobacco use * High Blood Pressure – HBP * High Cholesterol * Physical Inactivity * Excess Weight * Stress * Drug and Alcohol use
