Wetland Metaphor

Define: Wetland A wetland is an area that is covered with water for a large part of the year.

Define: Estuary A partially enclosed body of water where fresh and salt water mix. A partially enclosed body of water where fresh and salt water mix.

Define: Metaphor A word or phrase used to refer to something that it isn't, implying a similarity between the word or phrase used and the thing described, without the words "like" or "as". A MIXER THE WETLAND IS … As the waves pass through the grasses the wetland mixes nutrients and oxygen into the water.

a FILTER THE WETLAND IS … Floatables (garbage) caught by the stems of marsh grasses do not reach LIS. The wetland removes smaller pollutants as the waters pass through rocks, sand and sediments.

AN ANTACID THE WETLAND IS … The mixing that occurs with sediments neutralizes the PH of the water passing through the wetlands. Plants and animals are sensitive to the PH of the water. Neutralizes acid

A CLEANER THE WETLAND IS … The wetlands clean the water. Bacteria in sediments come in contact with pollutants, which break down toxic substances.

A SPONGE THE WETLAND IS … The wetland absorbs water and helps to control flooding.

A SOURCE OF FOOD THE WETLAND IS … Wetlands provide food for many animals.

A NURSERY THE WETLAND IS … LIS is a nursery and breeding ground for many animals. The low energy shoreline of LIS makes it a protected place for baby animals to grow.

A HOME THE WETLAND IS … The wetland provides shelter and a habitat for many types of animal.

A PLACE TO REST THE WETLAND IS … The wetland provides a resting place for migratory animals, examples: birds, seals butterflies & fish.
