Hydrology – a Sustainable Profession? Frank M. Law British Hydrological Society

Disconnection “The main modelling area of direct relevance to flooding is that of hydrodynamics, where the catchment hydrology is related to the channel hydraulics to predict flooding. However, since the introduction of the 1975 Flood Studies Report, there has been an increasing disconnection between these two disciplines, which must be addressed” p28 Learning to Live with Rivers ICE Presidential Commission 2001

Technical skills “…appropriate technical skills are lacking within the industry, from drainage engineers in local authorities to river engineers in the Environment Agency and skilled hydraulic specialists in universities“ p77 Learning to Livewith Rivers ICE Presidential Cmmission 2001

LOCAR "Lowland Catchment Research". LOCAR will undertake detailed, interdisciplinary programmes of integrated hydro-environmental research relating to the input-storage-discharge cycle and in-stream, riparian and wetland habitats within groundwater dominated systems.”

BHS International Conference Theme 4 - Interdisciplinary hydrological science and its application Studies at the interface between hydrology and other disciplines, including work in ecohydrology and biogeochemistry. It will also address work that links hydrology to the social sciences, and provides interfaces between hydrological sub-disciplines, such as studies of surface water/groundwater interactions and flow/quality relationships. This theme will report results from international programmes, such as HELP, and national research initiatives, such as CHASM/LOCAR in the UK July 2004, Imperial College
