Unified Credential Experience Subgroup

Discussion Questions – Experience Related Do we agree that 5 years is the appropriate minimum experience level for a person to be designated an Environmental Professional? No. We agreed that 7 years of environment-related experience with 3 to 4 of those years in a position of responsible charge* is the appropriate minimum level of experience for individuals who have an “environment-related academic background.” We agreed that 11 years of environment-related experience with 3 to 4 of those years in a position of responsible charge is the appropriate minimum level of experience for individuals who do not have an environment-related academic background. When the whole group met, there was some concern about the length of time, particularly regarding individuals who have non-environment academic background. The QEP program makes a two year distinction (rather than a four-year distinction) between those that do and don’t. So more discussion is warranted here. * to be defined by future work.

Discussion Questions – Experience Related If a person is to be designated as an Environmental Professional empowered to do specified tasks (coordinate air quality measurements, write spill prevention plans etc.) should the term “relevant environment-related work experience” be defined, and if so, how should it be defined? Yes Based on qualification & experience for the task at hand. Based on evidence of activities upon which the employing organization relies upon the individual for its decision making in within his or her specific area of expertise/knowledge/specialization.

Discussion Questions – Experience Related Should there be a different standard for the required number of years of environment-related work experience for an individual with: a. an environmental/ [scientific]-specific academic background; and b. a non- environmental/ [non-environmental]-specific academic background? Yes. With additional consideration being given for advance degree in the environment-related disciplines only.
