W HICH S UBGROUP SUFFERS THE MOST FROM POVERTY IN OLD AGE (65)? Allie Jardin

P REVIOUS R ESEARCH Focused on women, who they determined are more likely to experience poverty than men. These studies particularly blamed social security and labor force participation as key reasons for encountering poverty.

GSS D ATA General Social Survey had useful data on all variables I wanted to use. WRKYEARS, FAMGEN, CHILDS, MARITIAL, BLACK, POVLINE etc. However, by adding a selection filter Sex(2), age(65-100), I significantly decreased my sample size. This was necessary in order to properly uncover my questions

F INDINGS Cross-tabs Female 15.9% of sample was poor. With selection filter sex(2), age(65-100) Black 39.8% Yearsworked, hardly any (0-9) 30.9% Marital, 19.9% widowed & 30.4% separated Hkids, 29.0% with many (5-8) FamGen, 38.0% with 2 generation in household. What surprised me the most out of all of this data was that those who are separated suffer the most when it comes to elderly women in poverty.

S URPRISING Although all tests run with cross-tabs proved to be statistically significant the multivariate regression did not yield the same results. Only variable that was statistically significant was black, I had anticipated more of the variables being statistically significant with the multivariate regression.

T AKE A WAY L ESSON The population will continue to age, and unless new programs or our values change the United States as a whole will suffer the consequences. SAVE MONEY!!! For future research it would be interesting to focus on specifically those that were born and have worked long after the civil rights era, to see if significance among variables would change.

WHY IT MATTERS!!! tes.htm 12/29/content_ htm

This matters to me after Le Moyne because it is an issue that many of our family, friends, and us as individuals will face. The elderly, as can be seen throughout my research paper is a vulnerable population and they do not deserve to suffer from poverty later in life. Especially if they have spent their lives positively contributing to society.
