Common Core State Standards  A goal of CCSS is to prepare students for college and career readiness  Measured specifically in the 11 th grade  Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortia is developing the 11 th grade test for California and other consortia states

Transition to New Assessment 2015  AB 484 to codify the transition –Establishes Measurement of Academic Performance and Progress (MAPP) –MAPP will consist of English Language Arts and mathematics for grades 3-8, and grade 11asessments –MAPP establishes measures for 11 th grade Early Assessment

Transition to New Assessment  EAP will be incorporated into the new MAPP  EAP will continue to provide an early signal of college readiness to rising seniors – use senior year more productively  There will be no need to: –Grid an extra “bubble” –Have an additional essay exam  Logistics of reporting pending

Transition to New Assessment –Using the SBAC in the 11 th grade –The proposed plan is to accept the Achievement Level Descriptors which we anticipate to be equivalent to the current statuses  Ready  Ready Conditional  Not yet demonstrating readiness

Transition to New Assessment  EAP structure will remain the same  Ready Status - Exempt  Not Yet Demonstrating readiness – not exempt  Ready Conditional – must meet the condition requirements to keep the exemption  Important Note: Taking and passing the CSU Expository Reading Course (ERWC) does not mean a student is exempt –This only applies to conditional students

Transition to New Assessment 2014  CDE will be administering a field test  Field test will be used to determine proficiency levels, capacity, and vertical scaling  Field test results will not be released to districts, schools or individual students

Transition to New Assessment 2014  EAP is voluntary in 2014  CDE’s priority is for schools to administer the 11 th grade CST for the purposes of EAP –Must take complete CST and EAP test –Essay  Scoring and reporting will reflect EAP results only –Reporting logistics are being determined

Transition to New Assessment 2014  Benefits of participating in 11 th grade CST’s for your students –Students who show readiness on EAP will be exempt from EPT and/or ELM and the Early Start program –Spend less time and money preparing for tests and taking unnecessary courses  We highly encourage your schools to administer the EAP in 2014

EPT/ELM Registration  Students who are required to take English Placement Test/Entry Level Math (EPT/ELM) must register online  Campuses will inform the student if they are required to take the EPT and/or ELM  Students must pay with credit or debit card, or electronic check  If a student is exempt via the EAP, SAT, ACT, IB, etc. they are not required to take the EPT/ELM

Early Start Program  Goals of Early Start are to: –better prepare students in math and English, before the Fall semester of freshman year –provide better assessment and preparation –ultimately improve a students' chances of successful completion of a college degree

Early Start  Students who do not pass the ELM/EPT or earn an exemption are required to participate in the Early Start Program  Determined by the admitting (destination) campus  EAP Ready Conditional status students do not need to participate in Early Start, however: –Students that do not meet the conditional requirement will be required to complete remediation within the first year –The campus may request they participate in Early Start

Registering for Early Start  Student must use the Early Start Smart page to register  Inform the admitting campus how they will participate in Early Start –Service Campus –Destination Campus –Campus will send registration instructions**  Cost is $182 per unit plus $2 for campus fees –Student may be eligible for Early Start fee waiver

Registering for Early Start  Many campuses have specific requirements, important to follow the admitting campus’ direction  A student may register for a face to face course  Hybrid course  Fully on-line  Student may choose a 1 to 3 unit course –Campus direction –Based on students scores on EPT/ELM

Registering for Early Service Campus**  When the student informs the admitting campus that he/she will participate in Early Start at a service campus, the admitting campus will send the information to the service campus  The service campus will then send registration instructions to the student –Only then will the student be able to register

Exemptions from Early Start Participation  Student may be exempt from Early Start if: –Participating in a Summer Bridge/or similar program –Non-resident –International –Late-admits –Requested and was granted a waiver due to hardship –EAP Conditional – unless campus directed to participate

Deadlines and Tips

Using GG4HS with Your Students Share the app with high school juniors (11 th grade) and seniors (12 th grade). Ensure they install the app on their smart phones and/or tablets. Encourage students to: Click on notifications Add deadlines to their calendar Drill down into tips by clicking on links to additional resources Share deadlines and tips with peers by clicking on the Facebook, Twitter, or icons Share the mobile app with peers NOT at their high school. Encourage parents and counselors to have the app on their phones so they are aware of notifications that students are receiving.
