12th Open Workshop on Decision-Based Design Panel Session on Aggregation of Preference in Engineering Design Introduced by Wei Chen Associate Professor Integrated DEsign Automation Lab (IDEAL) University of Illinois at Chicago September 9th, 2001 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

List of Panel Topics The Role of DBD Theory in Engineering Design (9th workshop meeting, Jan. 2000) George Hazelrigg, Farrokh Mistree, Jami Shah, Debbie Thurston The Role of Decision Analysis in Engineering Design (10th workshop meeting, Sept. 2000) Yan Jin, Sundar Krishnamurty, David Kazmar, John Renaud Practical Perspective on DBD (11th workshop meeting, Jan. 2001) Ed Dean, Joe Donndelinger, Tao Jiang,Jerry Rescigno

Status of DBD Theory Development Great consensus that decision analysis should play an important role in engineering design. Many developments on using decision analysis in engineering design. Great consensus that multicriteria decision making approaches have limitations Lack of consensus on using economic benefit (profit) as the single criterion for decision making. Lack of consensus on the DBD framework Lack of consensus on the role of game theory and other decision theories in engineering design

Questions to be Addressed in Today’s Panel (Aggregation of Preference) How should the preferences of end users, product designers, and company managers be captured in engineering design? How should the method address uncertainty and risk attitude? What should be the role of multi-criteria decision making approach vs. single-criterion approach? What do you see as the top research issues for this topic in particular and for Decision-Based Design in general?
