COUNTERCULTURE TERMS & LINGO MAN: Basically refers to anybody or anything. Usually unnecessary to completing a sentence or thought in grammatically correct form, BUT IT DEMONSTRATED THAT YOU WERE COOL, HIP, OR NOT A “SQUARE”. THE MAN: Any group, entity, or institution that was viewed by youth as oppressive or potentially oppressive. This categorization could, and often did, encompass anybody over yrs. Old. Usual targets in this categorization were: The U.S. Government The U.S. Military Big Businesses Mainstream religious institutions Anybody who was successful, except for rock stars/musicians, actors, artists, poets, novelists, or philosophers, because they weren’t “corrupt”…Man!
