0 Creating a User Defined Pneumonia Syndrome in DOD ESSENCE Preventive Medicine Directorate User Guide Sept 2013

11 Pneumonia Specific Syndrome  NMCPHC retrospective analysis suggests that surveillance using a pneumonia specific syndrome can identify severe illness that may be associated with influenza.  This targeted surveillance may be especially useful during influenza season, when clusters of severe illness can be lost in the background of high numbers of routine encounters for influenza like illness.  Conducting routine surveillance with a user defined pneumonia specific syndrome may be useful to maintain awareness of severe respiratory illness within your area of responsibility. Creating a User Defined Pneumonia Syndrome in DOD ESSENCE1

22 Pneumonia Specific Codes  Pneumonia-specific codes are those that fall between ICD (pneumonia due to adenovirus) and (influenza with pneumonia) as well as (influenza due to identified avian influenza virus with pneumonia).  The following slides step through the process of creating a user defined syndrome in DOD ESSENCE.  Contact your cognizant NEPMU if you have any questions. NEPMU contact information can be found at the end of this presentation and at the NMCPHC field activities page, NEPMU staff can also assist with investigation support, risk assessment and obtaining definitive laboratory testing.
