Cheering Others On ©2002 Dr. B. C. Paul

The Gift of the Goose  “The Gift of the Goose Brings Enthusiasm to the Spirit of the Squirrel and the Way of the Beaver”  The Geese all honk at each other continuously – The lead Goose in the V changes but the honking continues – Not honking warnings  Cheer or encourage each other onward

The Gift of the Goose Cheering Others On  Management giving compliments and encouragement to the work of their team  Not just managers - everyone encouraging everyone else – but management must lead  Having a worthwhile task and the freedom to do it is a Mission – underlying need is for fulfillment

No Score - No Game  In sports performance is measured and cheered constantly at each increment – Cheer on and congratulate your workforce – Involve your organization in supporting each others performance – Open information and incremental recognition keep score

E=MC 2  Enthusiasm = Mission times cash and congratulations  Congratulations is the Missing Link in many incentive programs – Many organizations save congratulations for a ceremonial function just before Christmas bonus checks Have you ever watched a Football game where people sat in stone cold silence until someone made a touch down?

True Congratulations  True Congratulations are – Timely (get there quickly after people do things right) – Responsive (linked to specific definable achievements and actions) – Unconditional (don’t link it to - do better or do more - the condition is already met) – Enthusiastic (the manager is on stage - believe it - be positive - put the energy into the congratulations that you want them to put in the job)

The Right Continuum Programmed Spontaneous Blanket Individual General Specific Traditional Unique In Compliments - Choose the Right

Cheering the Right Thing  Cheer Progress - Not Just the Result – Make the work place its own little sports arena – Results are made of progress and opportunities capitalized upon  What if there is nothing to Cheer a person for? – There is always something – We live in a society that tries to find whats wrong in order to fix it - need a change of mindset – If people know what they’re doing right and have power to do it - maybe you won’t have to fix what is wrong

The Right Focus  Management has been trained to be problem solvers  Seeking out the guilty and punishing them is Police Behavior - not Management – Life is hard - The cold hard truth presented as honest information may be the only stick you'll ever need  Focus on finding the good and making it grow (Coach Behavior)
