CANYON MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETIC PROGRAM 2013-14 Castro Valley, California

HOW TO DECIDE WHICH TEAM SUITS YOU: Most sports teams at Canyon are not grade-specific (the only exception is 6th grade boys’ and girls’ basketball). Within the team setting, athletes may be asked to compete with other students of their grade or ability level. While some are gender-specific, many welcome boys and girls. Students are welcome to try out for whichever team they feel best suits their ability and participation level.

DO I NEED TO TRY OUT, OR DO I JUST MAKE THE TEAM? Tryout teams include: Cheer, Softball (Fall), Football (Fall), Basketball (Winter), Soccer (Winter/Spring), Tennis A (Fall or Spring), Volleyball (Spring), Golf (Spring) Non-tryout teams include: Cross-Country (Fall), Wrestling (Winter), Tennis B (Fall or Spring), Track and Field (Spring)

THE CHEER SQUAD IS CHOSEN DURING THE PREVIOUS SCHOOL YEAR This clip is from the 2011 “Battle of the Valley” (Canyon vs. Creekside evening flag football game, held at the Castro Valley High School stadium)

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATING IN AFTER-SCHOOL SPORTS Have a 2.0 (or higher) GPA (No more than one "F" grade) Have satisfactory citizenship (No more than 1 "U" mark) Have health insurance in the amount required by law--currently $1500 worth (insurance is available through the school district for a minimal cost) Be responsible for school equipment (including uniforms), and return equipment at the end of the season, or as directed Use, possession, sale, or being under the influence of alcohol, drugs, tobacco, or a controlled substance is not permitted. The violation of this rule will result in suspension from all athletic participation in that sport's season, and possibly the entire academic year. A athletic contribution of $75 per sport is requested. As we do NOT receive any funding from the district, this contribution, plus additional fundraising, is what allows us to offer an after-school sports program. For more information, or to request financial assistance, please contact the Canyon Boosters at cmsboosters@yahoo.com All Athletes must complete a Concussion Awareness form Parents who are planning to drive must submit Driver/Insurance information, and be a cleared volunteer.

IS THERE A PLACE FOR ME IN CANYON ATHLETICS? In 2013-2014, we had 624 students who submitted Athletic packets, with 476 athletes competing throughout the year for Canyon (some people did multiple sports). Canyon had over 1380 students enrolled in 2013-14. YES! There is a place for you!

8th GRADE STUDENT-ATHLETE AWARDS: Add animations 2013-14 Ray Thomas Award (8th grade Male Student-Athlete): Grant Thomas (Football, Basketball, Track and Field) 2013-14 Catherine Storar Award (8th grade Female Student-Athlete): Taylor Daniel (Cheer, Soccer, Track and Field)
