QUARTER 2 REVIEW

 How did the Agricultural Revolution contribute to urbanization and industrialization?  Produced more food using less workers

 Name all the factors of production (everything you need to make goods) you can think of.  Land, labor, capital  Raw materials, natural resources  Roads, railroad, water transportation

 What was the first country to undergo industrialization? What did they have?  Great Britain  Natural resources: iron, coal, water  Large population of people for labor  Rivers & harbors for transportation & boats  Good banking systems provided loans  Stable gov’t (encouraged business)

 What effect would the following have? Overcrowded housing & poor living conditions Pollution Streets full of waste & unclean water  Spread of Disease

 Name some negative working conditions during the Industrial Revolution.  Dangerous  Dirty  Long hours  Low wages  Child labor  Bosses used harsh discipline  Most workers lived in horrible poverty

 What were the 4 motives for Imperialism?  Economic: ind rev creates demand for more natural resources, new markets to sell products, competition w/ other ind nations…$  Racism: Europeans thought they were better Social Darwinism (most evolved society=$)  Religion: missionaries wanted to spread Christianity  Nationalism: the more colonies you have the stronger your country

 Why does the sun never set on the British Empire?  They have SOOOOOO many colonies all over the world!

 Name 2 negative & 2 positive results for Africans during Imperialism.  Loss of land, loss of culture, loss of trade, death, exploited (treated unfairly) for labor & resources  Improvements in heath care & education (literacy)

 What was the only product the British could get the Chinese to buy in large quantities?  Opium  What anti-foreign uprising occurred in China in 1900?  Boxer Rebellion

 Describe the Sepoy Mutiny. Who were the Sepoys? Why did they rebel? Why did it fail?

 What were the 4 MAIN causes of WWI?  Militarism (glorified military & prepared for war)  Alliances (drags everyone into war)  Imperialism (protect your colonies, they get involved)  Nationalism (show how strong your country is…)

 What countries formed the Triple Entente? Why did they align?  France  Great Britain  Russia  Formed this alliance b/c the Triple Alliance was increasing military power (Germany)

 Why was the Balkans known as the “Powder Keg of Europe?”  There were so many different ethnic groups & rivalries, many wanted independence, nationalism grew…if one event were to happen, it might explode the continent of Europe into war

 What event was the spark that ignited WWI?  Assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand

 In what country did the assassination occur? Who was the assassin? To what terrorist organization did he belong? What country was he from?  Bosnia  Gavrilo Princip  The Black Hand  Serbia

 What was Germany’s strategy for WWI? What was the purpose of using this plan?  Schlieffen Plan, to avoid fighting the Allies on 2 fronts

 What was the first major battle of WWI? Why was it so important?  First Battle of the Marne, it ruined the Schlieffen Plan & showed Germany they would have to fight a 2 front war

 Why did most of the fighting on the Western Front take place in such a small area?  Trench warfare made it difficult for armies to gain any ground

 What was the biggest turning point for the outcome of WWI?  America intervened!

 What were the 2 major events that turned American opinion against Germany?  Sinking of the Lusitania, Zimmerman Note

 Name 3 reasons WWI was considered a “total war.”  Women entered the workforce when men left to fight  All industries were converted into making supplies for the war  Rationing & propaganda were used

 How did WWI propaganda portray German soldiers?  Evil, barbaric, murderous monsters!

 What was the purpose of Woodrow Wilson’s 14 Points?  To create a lasting and fair/just peace

 How was Germany punished after the war?  Forced to accept full responsibility for the war  Had to pay $33 billion in war reparations  Lost colonies & other territory (Rhineland, Alsace-Lorraine)  Germany must drastically reduce military

 Why did the U.S. reject the League of Nations?  The U.S. did not want to get dragged into future European problems/wars
