46 Raising Level of Rigor and Relevance Activity International Center for Leadership in Education

47 Raising the Level of RR Overview: A student is expected to demonstrate their learning of author’s purpose by reading a self selected piece of text, from a predetermined list, and identify author’s purpose and justify their choice. Description Teachers will introduce vocabulary, using the four square model for authors purpose. Teachers will provide information regarding author’s purpose by discussing, reading and sharing different examples supported by the text. Teachers will model the procedure for the students. Students will work in groups, each having a different kind of writing: ads, speeches, poetry, video clip, etc. to examine author’s purpose. The students will do a jig saw, reading their piece and sharing with others. Students will read a nonfiction and fiction selection and use an attribute chart to identify the characteristics of the two types of writing and the author’s purpose. Students will reread one of the stories they have already read and find examples to support what they think the author’s purpose was. They will use the text coding strategy. 47
