Lesson Purpose Determine the obligations and responsibilities of citizens and evaluate how they impact the common good. Connect how these relate to being an active participant in society, government and the political process.

Common Good Common good - beliefs or actions that are seen as a benefit to the larger community rather than individual interests. Common good can also be called the public good. On your paper, write a definition of the common good in one complete sentence.

RESPONSIBILITY A responsibility is something you SHOULD do to impact the common good of your community. You are not required or forced to do it, but it is an essential part of becoming a good citizen.

OBLIGATION An obligation is something you are required to do. It is not optional.

Answer me this…. “At home or at school are there tasks you are required to do and activities you should do that benefit the whole family or school group?” "En casa o en la escuela hay que están obligados a hacer las tareas y actividades que debe hacer que benefician a la familia o grupo de la escuela?“ RoundTable Discussion, Each person has 30 seconds to talk

Answer me this… “Do you think there are tasks that you are required to do and should do to benefit the city you live in or to benefit the entire country?” "¿Crees que hay tareas que se requieren para hacer y debe hacer para beneficiar a la ciudad que vives o en beneficio de todo el país?" RoundTable Discussion, Each person has 30 seconds to talk

Rotating Stations Activity Instructions: identify if you are reading an obligation or a responsibility Column 1 write the title of the placard on either the responsibility or obligation side of the activity sheet Column 2 & 3 write a summary sentence explaining what it is and list the evidence from the placard that led them to decide if they are reading about an obligation or responsibility. You’ll have 2 minute at each station

Return to your seat Work with your FACE partner to complete Columns 4 & 5 (5 minutes) Brainstorm and write about how the obligation or responsibility benefits the common good and what the consequences are if it is not fulfilled.

JURY SUMMONS

http://www.martinclerk.com/PDF/jurySummonsSample.pdf. “Pretend that you are now 18 years old and you have just arrived home from school or work and you receive this in the mail. What is this asking you to do? How do you know? Are you required or obligated to show up?” Is there a consequence if you do not show up? How do you know? If everyone receiving a jury summons decided not to show up for jury duty, what would be the impact on the people who are on trial?”

Where did my tax dollars go? http://www.wheredidmytaxdollarsgo.com. Look at the pie chart and share out some of the programs or departments where tax dollars are spent. Consider what the consequences are for the programs if they receive less tax dollars.

Day 2: Answer me this…. “What does it mean to actively participate in something? Can you be a member or participant of something but not active? Can you think of any examples of this at school? Are there clubs or groups you are a member of but you don’t actively participate?” Discuss with SHOULDER partner Timed-Pair-Share

Print this slide for your reference with PEW Slide “Which example of political participation has the highest percentage of participants? Why do you think more people have signed a petition than sent a letter to the editor of a newspaper or magazine? What does this tell you about participation versus active participation? What do you think would happen if more people chose to participate in any of these categories? How can participation impact society, government or the political process?” (Whole Class Discussion)

Last Step: Look at the sixth column on Obligations and Responsibilities sheet that asks the questions: How does this act relate to being an active participant in society, government or political process? What is the impact of this act? Work with FACE partner to answer this question for each obligation and responsibility.

Checking for Understanding Write a well-crafted response using the following Prompt Based on what you have learned about obligations and responsibilities of citizens in this lesson, choose two obligations and two responsibilities and write an informational paragraph to explain what occurs if citizens do not fulfill the obligation or responsibility and the benefit to the common good when they do fulfill the obligation or responsibility.

Citizens Unite! Video Instructions while watching the video do the following: Write down the examples provided in the video of how to be a responsible citizen. Write down the individual mentioned in the video as being an example of a responsible citizen.

Let’s get up and move: Mixed- Pair- Share Stand-up-Hand- up- Pair –up Think for 15 seconds “Based on the list you created from the video, how does the video define what it means to be a responsible citizen?” Share with your partner Each person has 1 minute Person with the biggest hand goes first!

Examples of Responsible Citizens Your task is to read the passage and answer the following questions on the “What Does Being A Responsible Citizen Look Like?” activity sheet: How does this person exemplify a responsible citizen? How did their actions support the common good of the country?

Exit Response for Notebook: Write a well-crafted response to the following Prompt In 1961, President John F. Kennedy made this statement in his Inaugural Address: “…my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” Using what you have learned during this lesson, explain how this quote relates to the idea of being a responsible citizen and contributing to the common good.

Service Learning What do you think? “Do you think citizens your age can make a difference in the community?”
