Building Safety and Security

Building Safety and Security Most exterior doors in the public school are marked with a number, as well as a corresponding number on the interior. The # 1 Door is the main door to the building. The numbers go up as you go clockwise around the school. Not all doors will have a number but all main doors will.

Secure the School Procedure When a police incident of a dangerous nature is taking place outside in the community but near school grounds All students who are outside will be brought in by school staff All exterior doors will be locked and secured by school staff School operations will continue inside as if it was a normal day A member of the school resource unit will respond to the building to act as a point of contact for incident command

Secure the School Procedure When incident command gives the “all clear” the SRO will contact the principal who will release the school from the “Secure the School” by PA announcement If the situation dictates, the school can change from “Secure the School” to a Lockdown It CANNOT change from a Lockdown to a “Secure the School”

Lockdown Procedures The SRO unit is responsible for training the school staff in lockdown procedures Each school is required to perform two lockdowns each school year, one in September and another in January Lockdown drills are conducted by the SRO unit with assistance from other police units

Lockdown Procedures All Arlington Public School teachers & staff are taught the following procedures for lockdowns. P.L.L.Q. The “P” stands for Placard which they will have on either the window of the door or the door itself. GREEN means everyone is OK in the room RED means there is a life threating emergency in the room

Lockdown Procedures The “L” means lock. All teachers and staff are instructed to lock the door to their classroom and office area The second “L” means Lights. All lights in a classroom or office will be turned off. The “Q” means quiet. Teachers ,staff, and students have been instructed to remain silent at all times while in a lockdown.

Lockdown Procedures All teachers and staff have been advised to disregard the fire alarm during a lockdown.
