March 4, 2005 All rights reserved Torque – Angle in Slip Ring - Non-Contact Rotary Torque Sensor Installation Tips Foot mount torque sensor Driver Load Double flexible coupling For foot mounted shaft to shaft torque sensor, use double flex coupling to allow for the parallel and angular misalignment. Good alignment of foot mounted units is still necessary to reduce loads on the bearings.

March 4, 2005 All rights reserved Torque – Angle in Slip Ring - Non-Contact Rotary Torque Sensor Installation Tips Driver Load Single flexible coupling Floating shaft torque sensor A floating shaft to shaft torque sensor reduces net lenght of application, single couplings are cheaper than double coupling. Should only be used for torque ranges > 50 Nm, mostly used for long term tests.

March 4, 2005 All rights reserved Torque – Angle in Slip Ring - Non-Contact Rotary Torque Sensor Installation Tips Why do we have to use coupling ? Torque transducers have to be protected against bending forces. At certain speed a critical resonance peak can destroy the transducer.

March 4, 2005 All rights reserved Torque – Angle in Slip Ring - Non-Contact Rotary Torque Sensor Installation Tips lateral misalignment is caused either by production tolerances or assembly tolerances Angular misalignment is caused either by production tolerances or assembly tolerances Axial misalignment is mostly caused by expansion due to heat Coupling will compensate misalignment.

March 4, 2005 All rights reserved Torque – Angle in Slip Ring - Non-Contact Rotary Torque Sensor Installation Tips Selection of coupling Coupling should be stiff and flexible For high dynamic measurement stiffness is required to avoid damping and deformation during measurement. This is especially important in those situations where torsional vibrations are part of the measurement and may exceed by many times the static value. Couplings that will apply end thrust to the torque transducer should be avoided. Metal expands with increase in temperature this fact should not be ignored. flexible type stiff type

March 4, 2005 All rights reserved Torque – Angle in Slip Ring - Non-Contact Rotary Torque Sensor Installation Tips Selection of coupling Coupling should be stiff and flexible Misalignment is compensated by flexible coupling only. They can avoid inadmissable high bending forces and radial forces to be transfered into the torque transducer. The right choice of coupling is very important for the correct measurement. A torque transducer is a high precision measuring device and should not be employed as simple mechanical transmission element. flexible type stiff type

March 4, 2005 All rights reserved Torque – Angle in Slip Ring - Non-Contact Rotary Torque Sensor Installation Tips Basic factors for selecting a coupling are:  How much torque and speed will be transmitted ?  Is it required to remove easily ?  Will these coupling operate under adverse conditions ?  What is the cost ? flexible type stiff type
