What time is it? ( ¿Qué hora es?)

When you want to know the time in Spanish, you say “¿Qué hora es?” Some people also say “¿Qué horas son?”

Es la una. It is... Just like in English, spoken Spanish does not always require use of complete sentences for context purposes; however, for grammar purposes, we will learn to answer in complete sentences. To say “It is...” when telling the time in Spanish, there are two phrases to use...”Es la...” or “Son las...” “Es la...” is ONLY used when the stated hour is ONE. Any other time, use “Son las...” Es la una y diez.

Son las dos ¿Qué hora es? Anytime you do NOT hear ONE as the hour, you will use “Son las...” Son las cuatro y veinte.

Son las tres REMINDER!!! The formula for all hours except ONE is Son las + the hour.

Es la una y diez ¿Qué hora es? To express minutes after the hour, we simply add y and the number of minutes.

Son las tres y quince ¿Qué hora es? Son las tres y cuarto. or... Cuarto refers to a quarter of an hour.

Son las cuatro y treinta ¿Qué hora es? Son las cuatro y media. or... Media comes from the same word that we get median, which means middle.

Son las cinco y cuarenta ¿Qué hora es? Son las seis menos veinte. or After the halfway point of a given hour, Spanish gives us the option of stating the current hour plus (y) the number of minutes gone by or using the next hour minus (menos) the number of minutes left until the next hour.

Son las siete en punto ¿Qué hora es? En punto literally means “on the dot,” and is used to stress that an exact hour is being expressed, with no minutes before or after. The use of en punto is optional.

Son las ocho y cincuenta y cinco ¿Qué hora es? Son las nueve menos cinco. or...

Son las doce – It is 12:00. ¿Qué hora es? Es la medianoche. - It is midnight. or

¿Qué hora es? Son las doce. - It is 12:00 Es el mediodía. - It is noon. or...
