Michael Sayih is a 17 year old boy diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, a brain injury affecting the motor control centers of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy, during childbirth or after birth up to about age three. He has participated with his father, Jim Sayih, in community 5K runs since the age of 8. His father either pushed him in his wheelchair or pulled him with a bicycle. The events always brought joy to Michael as he embraced the wind in his face and fast movement as the ground beneath him passed. Michael also has participated with his father in fund-raising efforts to support Shriner’s Children’s Hospitals for over 12 years with the 911 Fitness Challenge. With Michael’s experience in fund-raising and passion about running vicariously through Dad, Michael wants others to enjoy the thrill of Runners Pushing Riders with Disabilities and created Michael’s Special 5K Run/Walk, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy. The Race course will be on beautiful Hollywood Beach on the Boardwalk, beginning at the Bandshell stage on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 7am. Runners will be matched with Riders in wheelchairs as well as jogging strollers. The general population is also encouraged to run, even without pushing a rider. United Cerebral Palsy is the leading service provider and advocate for adults and children with disabilities, including cerebral palsy. As one of the largest health non-profits in America, the UCP mission is to advance the independence, productivity, and full citizenship of people with disabilities through an affiliate network.
