The Town The news that Kino has a great pearl spread through the town. People started dreaming and desiring to get it. The beggars, the doctor, and even the priest knew that Kino had the Pearl of the World, and they were jealous

How Kino reacts He gets really excited with the treasure he has found and hope of having a prosperous life arises in him. He wants to give Coyotito an education, have a wedding with Juana, and even buy a rifle.

Later….. The doctor went to Kino’s house in order to pretend that he was interested in curing the baby. The doctor gives Coyotito a poisonous drink so suddenly Coyotito becomes sicker than before. After that, the doctor comes again but this time he “cures” the baby.

Ending of Chapter 3 The doctor figured out where the pearl was hidden. He leaves the house but then he sends two thieves to steal the pearl. Kino wakes up, has a confrontation with the thieves, and avoids the robbery. He uses his knife to defend himself and hurts someone else.

Analysis By finding the pearl Kino obtains a feeling of having something invaluable which brings a great responsibility on how to use it but at the same time fear to protect it. Kino turns into a paranoid, suspicious person, that wants to defend what he owns, and wants to get out from the horrible situation in which he has been all his life.

Analysis What happens is that Kino is full with hope to provide a better living for his family, especially with education for Coyotito because education would provide an escape from the oppression. Juana understands that the fortune the pearl brings is shadowed by the feelings it provokes among people: in the town, greediness; and in Kino, covet.
