The Details Behind Every Event

1836- Texas is FREE from Mexico Texas becomes the 28 th state in the U.S Houston becomes Texas’ 1 st president Asks to join U.S. but doesn’t get an answer Lamar becomes president and makes his main focus to decimate natives Houston is re-elected and again pushes for annexation, after his term U.S. says yes Dr. Anson Jones is elected and the Texas can now join the Union.

Texas Declares Independence  Cause- Texas loses self-determination  Effect- Texas declares independence  Mexico enforced the Law of April 6, 1830 due to the fact that they thought they were going to lose control of Texas  Texas can no longer exercise local control and loses their self- determination  Texas declares independence from Mexico (March 2, 1836)  Texas achieves independence after victory in battle of San Jacinto and capturing of Santa Anna (April 21, 1836)  Sam Houston elected President of the Republic of Texas

Texas Approves Idea of Annexation  Cause-Texas elects Sam Houston  Effect- Texas Approves idea of annexation  Houston wins 1836 election, strongly encourages idea of annexation  After election of officers and officials, Texas votes and decides on annexing  Houston needs to stop tensions with Mexico and cut debt  Texas formally proposes annexation to U.S.

CAUSE- HOUSTON WANTED TO JOIN THE U.S.EFFECT- NO ANSWER  In Houston’s first term he tried to get Texas into the U.S., he sent in a request, but to no avail.  Texas was not able to join the Union at the time.

CAUSE- LAMAR IS ELECTED  Lamar was more focused on terminating the natives, and rebuilding Texas more than joining the Union. EFFECT- THE QUEST FOR ANNEXATION IS DELAYED  Lamar seriously improves education, but in his term he raised debt and conflicts with the natives. Texas was not any closer to being a state.

CAUSE- TEXANS WANT TO BE AMERICANS  Houston was mainly re- elected for the cause that everyone agreed on the idea of becoming a state. This helped get Houston re- elected because he gave Texas a better shot at getting annexed than anyone else. EFFECTS- TEXAS ALMOST REACHES ANNEXATION

CAUSE- HOUSTON WASN’T ELIGIBLE, JONES IS ELECTED  Houston can’t serve two consecutive terms  Jones was in favor of Texas becoming a state  Everyone agreed on wanting to become a state EFFECT- TEXAS PUSHES FORWARD TOWARDS ANNEXATION  U.S. agrees to let Texas join the Union  Texas has only one step left to become a state

Texas Becomes a State  Cause- U.S. approves the joint resolution  Effect- Texas becomes the 28 th state  The U.S. passes the joint resolution (later made amendments, February 27, 1945)  Annexation resolution signed and sent to Texas (President Tyler, March 1).  Texas annexation by joint resolution voted on by House and approved by Senate (December 16-22)  Resolution signed by Polk, Texas officially becomes the 28 th state
