La a personal

The basic rule The a precedes a specific person or persons used as a direct object. – Levantó la bandera. He raised the flag. – Levantó a la muchacha. He lifted the girl. – Recuerdo el libro. I remember the book. – Recuerdo a mi abuela. I remember my grandmother.

The personal a with pets???? Many pet owners think of their animals as people, and so does Spanish grammar, so the personal a is used. – Yo amo a mi perro, Dudley. I love my dog, Dudley. But the personal a isn't used with ordinary animals (you have to love them!). – Ms. Greenless recibió un conejo, Peanut, cuando tenía 11 años. Oh no! Ms. G did not love her rabbit, Peanut. If she had, she would have used the personal a when describing him. Or her. She can’t even remember! Yo veo tres elefantes en el zoológico. I see 3 elephants in the zoo.

Tener and Haber Usually the personal a is not used with tener and haber. Yo tengo 2 hijos. Hay dos chicos guapos en mi clase de historia.
