11.2 THE TEXAS REVOLUTION 10 April 2014

American Settlers Move West  1821: Mexico became independent.  1824: Mexico adopted a republican constitution that declared rights for all Mexicans  Empresarios: agents – bring settlers to Texas – paid in land  Stephen F. Austin: empresario that started a Texas colony  The first 300 families became known as the Old Three Hundred. – very successful!

American Settlers Move West  Americans were given free land by the Texas government, but they had to obey Mexican laws.  Many Americans chose NOT to obey laws ADD THIS: colonist brought slaves with them, which was banned in the Texas territory at the time!  1830: Angered by this, Mexico banned further settlements by Americans

Texans Revolt Against Mexico  October 1835: Mexican army tried to remove a cannon from the town of Gonzales, Texas, but the American rebels would not allow them. The rebels won marking the beginning of the Texas War for Independence  March 1836: Texans declared independence from Mexico – became Republic of Texas!

Texans Revolt Against Mexico  Created a Republican government modeled after US gov’t  President: David Burnet; Vice- President: Lorenzo de Zavala; head of Texas army: Sam Houston  Austin went to the United States to seek money and troops.

The Battle of the Alamo  Date  Feb 23- Mar 6, 1836  Leaders  M: Santa Anna  T: Col. William Travis  What happened?  Less than 200 rebels fought the huge Mexican force at Alamo  Outcome  Mexicans won but huge losses – all rebel defenders of the Alamo were killed

Battle of San Jacinto  Date  April 21, 1836  Leaders  M: Santa Anna  T: Sam Houston  What happened?  Santa Anna chose site carelessly – Houston surprised attacked the M camp shouting “REMEMBER THE ALAMO!”  Outcome  Texans captured Santa Anna and forced him to sign treaty granting TX its independence

An Independent Nation  Sam Houston was the hero of the new independent nation of Texas  Created a new town name Houston and made it the capital  To increase the population, Texas offered land grants. American settlers came from nearby southern states, often bringing slaves with them to help grow and harvest cotton.

An Independent Nation  Most hoped that the US would annex, or take control of Texas, making it a state.  President Andrew Jackson refused – concerned that admitting Texas as a slave state would upset the fragile balance of free and slate states  Also did not want to have a war with Mexico over Texas

An Independent Nation  US, France and Britain recognized Texas as an independent nation – became a state in 1845  Mexico did not recognize Texas as an independent nation  Republic organized the Texas Rangers to guard long frontier from Mexican and Native American attacks  In 1844, Texas and Mexico signed a peace treaty  Events will ultimately lead to the Mexican-Amer. War!
